    Two good deeds.

Faye and I ran errands after Woody and his wife headed home with Trooper. (Good deed #1)

On our way home we saw a car on the shoulder and a fellow using a stick or bat to herd a bird off the pavement onto the shoulder. As wepassed by we saw that it was a . . . Common Loon?!?!?! They aren't at all common around here; as a matter of fact neither of us have ever seen one. Literally.

So we pulled a u-turn and went back to offer help. The fellow was leaving but said he had called wildlife rescue. We decided to stay until they arrived. Faye got a small blanket from the trunk to cover, protect, and confine it, keeping well away from its long pointed beak. It appeared to have some kind of leg or foot injury. We didn't realize how BIG a loon is!

    (Good deed #2)

Two animal rescue officers arrived about 30 minutes later. One of them had been in the office when we were there with Woody. They packed it into a small kennel for transport to a rehabilitator.

    Here's a photo.

That was very nice of you. The poor thing could have gotten into the road again and gotten killed.

Some research revealed that loons aren't mobile on land and need a fair amount of open water to get in the air. So possibly it landed close by where it was found (no open water we know of) for some reason and was stranded. We want to follow up with the rescue tomorrow.

ETA: Woody we hoped our karma would extend to winning the lottery. Nope.

I've only seen a Loone in the distance or in pictures. Never close enough or with something in the picture for perspective. I didn't realize they were that big.

    Such great good deeds.

Beautiful loon! We have a lake house in Maine so we see them often, but that is a very close encounter.
