    Such a tiny mite.

I put our hummingbird feeder out late last week because one had been sighted about 30 klicks away. Looked out at just the right time yesterday afternoon and saw a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

It's been a not great week to be a hummingbird - damp, mostly coolish, rainy at times. So I was happy to have the feeder out to help the tiny mite, and am once again astounded by their amazing migration.

awww they are such an amazing little bird.

With the way habitats are being destroyed around here I usually keep a little something out for the birds off and on all summer long. I want the babies to learn how to feed themselves so I don't usually put anything out in the summer unless we have had a stretch of heat with no rain and especially winter.

I told a coworker that we had seen a hummingbird and the next day she put up her feeder. She said as soon as it was up and she’d barely stepped away that one appeared and then a Baltimore Oriole was feeding.

We have some Orioles around the yard along with tons of Blue Jays.

Over the weekend we had a Red Cardinal sitting on the fence for awhiile but he was too far away to get a picture of.
    Thanks Everyone!!

I wish we'd see some orioles around here! I saw an article just yesterday by one of our local news guys about someone in western MD having orioles and rose breasted grosbeaks in their yard where they'd put a hummingbird feeder out that also had some orange halves and a little cup of grape jelly stuck on the top. They were hoping to appeal to orioles and thought the hummingbird feeder's color might have helped attract them to some of their favorite foods.

I'm pretty jealous. I'm from Baltimore, and I've never seen an Oriole. We get tons of Cardinals and Blue Jays around here. I love seeing hummingbirds, but sadly we don't get them here.

Snowshoe, I did see an oriole yesterday. Last year it (or another one) preferred the hummingbird feeder to the oriole feeder!

labsnewfy, I have fed the songbirds year round, though at a less prodiguous (sp?) rate from late spring through early fall. This year we began providing water a few weeks ago.

Woody, we have lots of different birds. Goldfinches, house finches, pine siskins, grackles, starlings, a woodpecker, two different kinds of nuthatches, bluejays, the oriole, mourning doves, a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (it should arrive any day now), It’s not only because we feed the birds. It’s also because there’s a variety of trees on our block and we have lots of different plantings in our yard.

smartrock as I mentioned we have an oriole which likes the hummingbird feeder more than its own feeder.

I've just learned the Orioles will come for bananas too. As will Monarch butterflies.
