    Gathering

We never got around to cleaning up last years' Butterfly Bush stalks. The Baltimore Orioles arrived early this month. After (I presume) a few days of recovery from their migration this male began visiting the stalks, peeling them, flying away, returning soon to repeat the process. Research revealed that he was gathering nesting materials.

So we will leave the stalks this autumn and in future autumns. It's yet another reason for us to have a (so-called) untidy yard.

    Here he is in action.

Not gone, only gone on ahead - Bruno, Rex, BoJo, Kendal, Kingsley, Moonpie, Avis, Corndog, Stella, and now Achilles

I really admire you for doing that for the Orioles. They are such a beautiful little bird.

So nice to see. WE have two pairs, I think. I can't see a nest.

I think I saw one long, long ago but certainly not in the last 20 years or so. Not fair!

Barry, well, you are welcome to visit next year if that means you get to see an oriole!

lovemylabby, thank you! They are beautiful. We have learned that removing every last bit of dead matter, and also having an immaculate yard, reduces diversity. So we have sort of worked at having a lot of varied habitat on our about 8700 square foot lot.

    Jollymolly, thanks and so true!

Snowshoe, I think two oriole pairs live nearby and sort of time-share the feeders as I’ve seen two males at the backyard feeder.

smartrock, did you see them around in past years?

Lucky you. I would so love to see an oriole in person, much less in my backyard. What a beautiful bird.
