Regarding the remote starter, a friend of mine was still warned by police about this, she was also warned about not leaving her car idling, we have a city bylaw of 1 minute.
I see you are in Canada so I assume but that is the difference but am I understanding correctly that it is illegal to use remote start there if you are not in the vehicle within 1 minute?

I recently did a 10 hour road trip with Emma. When I had to go to the restroom I stopped at rest stops that had outdoor bathrooms, and brought her in to the family bathroom with me. In florida/georgia summers it's way to hot to leave them in the car even with the windows open and in the shade. Then I had to go at reststops that had no outdoor bathroom, but there was a police officer there. I asked him if it would be ok to park next to him and if he could watch my car since I wanted to leave it on since my pup was in the back. He had no problem doing that. And it would deter any theft since I was parked next to a cop.

I hate people like that. there is a guy at our boxing gym who will come in for a class and leave his two labs in the car, windows down. Usually its not so hot, so I think they are ok. But lately it has been ungodly humid. We can see his dogs from the class, but I really worried about them

It's not a remote start issue, it's an idling issue.

Yeah, that is what I am asking. So if you use your remote start you have to be in your vehicle within 1 minute of starting it?

Is this just a county thing where you live? Is the reason CO2 emissions?

    This is our city bylaw.

Toronto's idling control bylaw has been improved! City Council has approved the following changes:
    • Reduce the legal idling time for vehicles from three minutes to one minute in a 60 minute period
    • Eliminate exemptions for transit vehicles
    • Eliminate temperature exemptions (i.e. very hot or cold conditions)

Eliminating unnecessary idling is part of Toronto's overall action plan to reduce the emissions that contribute to climate change and poor air quality.

I leave Kain in the car but time myself no more than 5 minutes and no hotter than 75 degrees out.

To answer to Smartrock :Here we have those rest stops along the freeway, I just take Kain with me if I have to go. We do long road trips through California probably once every 2 months or so. I'm so weird about leaving Kain most of the time, so I drink very minimal fluids so I won't have to go to the bathroom.

My policy is if Opie can't go in, DW goes in alone or I do, one or the other but no kids, no dogs or chocolate bars left in the vehicle unattended, ever. Especially in the hot Arizona sun.

I can't take them into the restrooms at McDonald's so I crank the AC up to chill the interior of the car as much as possible, try to park in some shade, run in and use the bathroom, and then come back out and go through the drive through if I'm getting food. Then we go to a nearby gas station so I can fill up the tank and the pups get their McDoubles and a drink of cold water. I know this isn't exactly the same situation, but sometimes the dog needs to stay in the car for a few minutes. I'm sure there are folks on here who travel to dog shows who have to stop and use a bathroom and leave dogs in the car briefly.

Aside from not stopping to use the restroom, does anyone else have suggestions for long trips where you are alone with your dogs?
I do the same as you and im not above peeing on the side of the road. If I just have 2 of the dogs, I leash them up and go find a bush, gets tricky holding both leashes but I make it work

I dont get the point of going to starbucks just to leave a dog in the car, kinda ignorant and senseless
