    MORE brilliance

ok, I'm just gonna say i know very little about shock collars other than they can vibrate, or shock. is it normally the first way to try and train a dog?

my neighbor, the one who smashed my car and ran, and got a pet store mutt , just old me she's using a 'thing' to train this 8 lb dog as per her trainer. i say "a clicker?"

"no, one of those collars with the thing"

my eyeballs nearly popped out for several reasons-she's a nitwit and won't use it properly, for starters, and is it usual to use right away on such a little flea?

maybe i just don't know my stuff regarding this .
    what do you think?

and she's using it for regular training-not to teach it not to bark, or something like that. just everyday training.

The first time I saw a shock collar used was by a houndsman. His dog would strike the wrong game and take off for the night. Several mos later, we were out hunting one night and he said that dog was a "check dog". A check dog panic'd in fear and split tail tuck to the truck when the wrong game was struck. He then knew to pull the hounds in before they were lost, whatever.

They can be used that way. The U.S. Humane Society endorses training with electronic collars. They can stim (shock), vibrate or tone.

But I bet your neighbour will just go off willy nilly with no training on the thing. Poor little dog. Maybe she meant a prong? Poor little dog.

Isn't this a little puppy? Certainly would not use one on a puppy.

I thought you're supposed to use them only on commands your dog already knows.
Like, if you haven't taught him what sit means, it's not fair to nick him when he doesn't sit.
He has to know what action is expected, and then he learns that he can turn off the stimulation by doing the action requested.

And the USHS also endorses Michael Vick as a dog owner.

Betty, while training with an electronic collar can be done, it needs to be by an experienced person, NOT by the goober that is your neighbor. And I most definitely wouldn't put one on such a small dog either. Has she lost her stinkin' mind? Oh wait, by the sounds of this, and your other posts about her, she never had one to begin with!

I just can't imagine her using a shock collar on a dog that weighs 8lbs! She really sounds like a nut case.
