yup...i was a goof and didnt' realize i had the loop of the long-line going past that finger, and when a certain yellow fur butt saw a squirrel.... snapped it sideways. I think it was not quite 2 weeks ago? its the very top bone, there's just a faint red line through the middle of that top joint now, plus its slightly crooked now toward my middle finger, I didn't get it set. I've broken my middle finger at the middle joint on both hands, the right hand at least twice, and all they've done is pulled it, and stuck that metal contraption on it (horses, dogs and sports can play havok with your bones!)
this one only aches a bit at night, and if i bang it sideways - i can do the typing with it now so long as i don't pound the keys. hoping its pretty much back to normal in another week.
Yours looks like a far more involved break, and in a more important/used area. very good thing you got it taken care of!

Snoutpout, I broke the top bone of the baby finger on my right hand almost two years ago (slipped while out with Cooper doing his business and smashed my hand off of our front porch stairs), sounds similar to where your break is, mine took months to heal as I had torn the tendon off of the bone. Hopefully your finger doesn't take as long to heal, sounds like yours is coming along. I find I am using my hand more than I have been, and I too am hoping that in another week the buddy taping can stop. We really take our hands for granted and don't realize how much we use them until we can't. Take care
    Michelle

How is your finger and the plans to wear your weeding ring now? I think Scoutpout has a great idea - draw a fancy diamond on your tape!

Hope it's healing well and you are enjoying a wonderful wedding anniversary!

The things we endure with our pups - good job we love them so much!!

Thanks for all of the good wishes. I was unable to wear my wedding rings on our anniversary trip, and have yet to be able to put them on The finger is now splint and tape free, but I am having problems being able to bend it. I can get it to about 45 degrees and then I can't get it to go any further partly because of pain and partly because it just won't bend. My family doctor thinks that I should just keep bending it and eventually it will bend, me I am not so sure. My finger was broken in the joint (proximal interphalange joint)and from what I have read, can cause permanent issues with stiffness, unfortunately to get into hand therapy for an assessment I need a Doctors referral and my Doctor doesn't think it is necessary. Any one with any experience with this??

Yes - mine was broken between the lower and middle knuckle and I remember not being able to bend it properly. It still won't bend at the very top or all the way to make a fist, although I still try and do the exercises. Warning - painful!!

You do need a referral to a hand clinic - they specialize in joints and spiral fractures are really in a league all of their own. (Aren't we special?!) It was pretty excruciating - I had hot sand, hot compresses and the exercises. . . really who would have thought a finger could cause so much pain! But the hand therapists know what they are doing and now is the time to go.

One exercise I still do is to bend all my knuckles into my fist from the top joints and using a finger from my left hand, gently push down on the broken finger to bend it closer to the inside of my hand. Hope that makes some sense? Happy stretching!!

Bett, I have been following Cory's broken finger...his sounds so much worse than mine...and I am having the worst time (which I think in part is because of an uneducated family MD) I am six weeks post fracture, and the finger is still swollen and bruised. Hard to believe one little finger can be such a pain in the a$$. Sure hope Cory has a speedy and uneventful recovery and I am sure he is being followed by specialists, which is definitely in his best interest!!

Polly Pipkin, so glad to hear we are "special" lol. I cannot get into a hand therapist, but do have an appointment with a physiotherapist Monday for an assessment. Just in talking with her quickly she mentioned hot wax, acupuncture and did say that with finger injuries "no pain is definitely no gain" and encouraged me to take pain medication before the appointment. She will assess for tendon and pulley injury at the same time, which can contribute to me joint not bending. I forgot to add...I show Cooper my finger daily and say "look what you did to Mommy". He looks at me with those big brown eyes and I forget about the finger. Love my boy

Will keep you posted after my appointment Monday
