Oh, your story brings back memories...I remember the fear when I discovered that my Roo was missing. I allow the cats outside to sit on the deck and watch the world go by (+12' off the ground). Evidently, he didn't come in with his brother that night. The next morning, he wasn't waiting for his food. I looked around the house then went outside. I found some tufts of fur in the backyard. I called work and said I wasn't going to be in. My kind boss said OK and good luck.

I ran around the block calling his name, looked up trees (a woman asked if I'd lost a parrot?), peaked under porches. My next door neighbor came over and looked in her crawl-space basement which is accessible by a never-closed door. Nothing. She told me to take a look in case he didn't recognize her voice. I found him, not in the basement, but in an area under her sunroom where they stashed their grill. He was covered in black charcoal, smelled horrible and had a couple of scratches. My neighbor gave me a towel and we wrapped him in it, rubbed off the dirt and cleaned him up. His brother hissed at him when they were re-introduced so I put Roo in my bedroom for the day to calm down and sleep.

By the next day he was back to normal. He still went on the deck to watch the birds but never fell off again. I never forgot him again either!!

I am so glad you found her and she is home safe and sound.

AJ and Merlin were both kept outside before we rescued them - they both dart out the door given half a chance. AJ spent many a single night outside after getting under one of the dogs and walking out with them, all being black I didn't see him sneak out with the dogs. Merlin does it now as big as he is you would think I would be able to see it is a cat and not a dog, plus he is gray. Thankfully Merlin has never spent the night outside he is such a scardy cat I don't' know if he would come home to me or take off. We tried the water bottle but it didn't seem to faze them. Tucker has gotten out once I didn't realize he had followed me into the garage when I was taking down the trash but the next door neighbors cat put him running back inside. You can open the door and Penny will just sit looking around, I think she knows she is better off inside then out. We do a head count now before going anywhere.

Happened to me yesterday too. I took my upright vacuum outside to clean my car, and while I was juggling the Windex, paper towel and vacuum one of my cats slipped out. I didn't notice him at all until he was rolling around on the sidewalk.

Jay and I go away on weekends and do the same thing with the food/water and I leave a key for my mom in case she wants to stop in. I remember leaving for Niagara falls and forgetting to take the feeder off of the top of the fridge (didn't want them eating it all before we even left cause they would)! Luckily I had left that key for my mom so she was able to save them I felt so terrible.

Many years ago I had a cat sitter come in while my husband and I went on vacation not long after we were married. I told her that a friend who did contracting work would be coming in one day to change out the bathtub so the cats had to be confined.

We drove into the yard when we returned and saw food bowls in the yard. All six of our cats had escaped and wound up under the house. She never said a word, just put out food dishes. It took a week to get one back inside. I would just sit out there every day and talk to him. It wasn't the first time I had used the sitter by any means.

Don't feel bad. There's only so much in life that can be controlled. I'm glad your kitty is OK.

Thanks all! She did it again when I came home from work! Didn't even notice until she couldn't be found. Luckily she came right back inside when I opened the door. Then she got out the back under the dogs and I grabbed her. So we did a little squirt gun therapy until she lost interest...for now.

Piper is an adorable and fun name and I'm sure you are doing great. Cats are very sneaky! Now Pandora's box has been opened you are going to have to be very careful. My friend who has 3 cats does head counts every time she leaves and she makes the poor kitties wear collars all the time even though they are inside! She confessed that last week she shut one cat into the dryer..... Started it and stopped it immediately and thankfully the cat is fine. She is normally really careful to keep the dryer shut- watch out for the dryer! My aunt killed her cat on the dryer. Debbie downer right? I let mine out on supervised outside time - he used to be on a harness and leash but now he just sleeps in the porch.
Have we seen a picture of piper yet??
