Around here code requires smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Trying to remember if they are also required to be hard wired along with a battery; I believe so. Found this out when DD's house was rebuilt.

All I know for sure is if a battery is going to go, it's in the middle of the night with that dang thunk, thunk, thunk sound, back when they were simple battery powered.

Tip from an electrician: When you change the battery, blow it out with a blast of canned air. Dust inside can make them go off.

    I've had this happen.

Not sure though, it was really strange.
Blow it out with compressed air. Dust inside can screw with the sensors and make it go off at random.

Air freshener's can also make them go off in the middle of the night. I experienced this one
Our SD's have a solid green LED light when on and OK. Flashing red LED when battery is bad or in alarm. They are all interconnected (code here). They are Kiddie brand, bought at an electric supply house.

The weird going off episodes could also be from a wandering bug or spider.

Ha! its contagious! Code here is for a hardwired smoke detector on each level. As well as those 2, I also have 2 smoke/fire detectors in the downstairs apartment, 1 more smoke/fire detector on the main floor, 2 carbon monoxide detectors on the main floor, and 2 more carbon monoxide detectors downstairs. Of course thats like 5 differing types of lights and sounds to figure out! Normally do the battery change with the clock changes in fall and spring. And the downstairs doorlock (electric keypad instead of key for the apartment) batteries then too.
