odd.
I don't know what it is about the people here. I thought it was the current environment or economy or what have you. Then today I was working in our neighbor's yard. I've been reworking his gardens and lawn while he's been at his other house and our contractors have been around.
I was working in a flower bed out back and I hear someone calling out, "Hello! Hi!" and a woman who is probably ten years older than I am is walking across the lawn toward me. She introduces herself as the woman who lived with the people who owned the house in the early '70's and asks some questions (am I the owner, where do I live, etc). It seems polite enough, I explain that the owner is away for the weekend and I'm on the verge of saying that my husband would love to talk to her since he knew the owners and their daughter and is always interested in the history of the homes in the area. But then she starts telling me that the daughter had moved back into the area after the family sold the house to the current owner and that she is just devastated about how crappy the house looks.
She went on and on and made special mention of the fact that when she lived there the gardens were just beautiful but now . . . as I'm standing there with my shovel. The cherry on the sundae was that she told me that she never even knew there was a house "back there" (ours) and who were we? Oh. That was the barn.
I went back to my house, told my husband what had happened and he used some choice language. Then he said that he couldn't even remember who this woman was even though he was eleven when she was there.
It must be something in the air.
Totally bizarre.
