Such great suggestions, thank you all! Definitely going to be taking some of these measures, but I did find a good space heater on a yard sale Facebook page for a great price that I'm hoping does a good job too.

I just went to the house Jay's grandparents own in New Hampshire with them for the weekend and drove up with his grandmother, who mentioned they are actually trying to replace our heating system with some sort of wall unit. We do have a gas stove, so I think it had to do with that but I'm not entirely sure. They've just been waiting to get a mortgage on our house so they have the money to do it, so hopefully soon!

we live in Alaska and live in a house about the same size as yours. I would highly recommend installing an oil fired Toyo stove. It is all we use and it cost's us about 1200 a year to heat our house!
They cost around 1500 and direct vent through a wall. You would also then need an oil tank and stand.
It is the cheapest way to heat that we have found. We do not keep our house cool either. Neither my husband or I like to be cold!
