What happens to these women?

I'm sitting at the top of my driveway with approximately one ton of candy and my dead flamingo display and at about a quarter to six, the neighbor who drinks like a fish, was supposed to quit smoking pot a few weeks ago and has never once spoken to me (she walks away when I approach her), comes down the sidewalk with her kids, someone she knows and an enormous glass of wine. It turns out that they have been down at the town center where a new Halloween celebration for children has been instituted. So right out of the gate, she's drinking on public property.

She goes into her house while her friend takes her kids trick or treating and immediately the smell of pot comes wafting toward me. Then she comes back out with a wine refill and stands in my driveway for the next hour chatting about the most random things. She goes on about how the new people in town and people with kids are so nice here but the established families in her old town were terrible so they just had to move. Apparently this is the story she tells herself. As a record number of trick or treaters come by, she's not just drinking, she's talking about drinking, explaining that her old town was good for drinking because everything was in walking distance and she didn't have to drive, inviting women who are with their kids inside to have a drink and getting their kids' names wrong. Everyone is trying to get away from her as politely as possible but the one woman who takes her up on the drinking is the other neighbor who I thought was on prescription medication and has been having work done on our property. That woman takes her glass, bolts the wine as she is informed that "this is the cheap wine, that pinot noir you don't like". Couldn't tell because she downed half the huge glass. So somehow we managed to get the luck of the draw in the substance abuse department.

I don't understand this. It is now clear that everyone knows that these women are doing these things. This is not something that I am witnessing because our house borders their backyards. This is something that they are doing on a children's holiday on the town green.

Do you know people like this? They have five kids between the two of them. Where is this going?

So sad for the kids. I don't care about the adults, they should have sense enough but it's the kids I worry about.
