Last thurs DW and I went, (of coarse with Opie and the chihuahuas), to look for a camp area with a saguaro and shade trees. We go out on the desert BLM land to camp where there are no RV parks and few people. We found a spectacular spot and, wanting to make a list of spots, went to find others. We turned onto a trail that led up to a power line that stretched off into the distance.
Just as we were about to turn on to follow the power line maintenance road, we spotted a saguaro with sticks in one of its joints. Then I saw what looked like a little eyeball and it MOVED. I stopped the truck and got out and noticed a hawk circling above me.
Well, to make a long story short, look at the pic. We found two nest, containing two babies in one and one in the other. Ain't that a CUTIE?!?

The cactus is awesome enough, but that little face is just precious!

Great photo. I'm embarrassed to say I had to google Saguaro -- had no idea what that was.

Awesome picture! Also looks like some other creature, maybe a bird, had a hole for a nesting site.

Is it unusual to find a nest in the cactus? I would think it would be an uncomfortable place for babies, but maybe the cactus deters predators?
