    How much firewood?

We are using firewood as our primary heat source in half of our house this year. We have so much of it from the clearing we did last year, maybe five cords. I'm curious about how much people go through if they are using it constantly.

My dad has a wood stove in his basement to supplement his electric heat pump. He's been the local goto guy in the neighborhood when anyone has a tree fall. He has an old barn full of wood. I conservatively estimate he's got 30 cords stock piles. He probably uses 4 cords per year but he is just supplementing his electric heat pump with a wood stove in the basement.

The amount you use would probably vary greatly on where you are located, the size of your house and if it is the only heat source. I had a 2800 sq ft house, in north eastern, MD that we heated only with wood and we used about 6 - 8 cords of wood in the winter.

Fantastic. It sounds like I'm in the ballpark. We're in Massachusetts and that half of the house is about 2400 sq ft. Some of the wood is older so I want to get through it.

It's also going to depend what your using like a wood stove is going to radiate more heat than a fireplace. My uncle and grand parents on the old family farm had a relatively large house and workshop. It was all well heated on about 5-6 cords. In fact I remember there were times we had to open the windows it got so hot in there. However was always cold in the morning as the fire had died down or was out. Took a while to get up and going again.

The fireplace is working really well. I'm wondering if it's because the living room and attic and completely open so the air circulates better but we haven't had an oil tank fill yet this year and I'm thinking we're good until the end of November which is completely unheard of in this house. We should consider a wood stove in the future though.

Ours is a wood stove, our house is a little over 700 sq. Ft. And I live where it drops below freezing RARELY. Once or twice a yr for a few hrs in the early morns, and we used less than half a chord.

We're in Northern CT. We have an outdoor wood furnace as our primary heat source, with oil as backup. We burn about 6 cords of wood during the winter.

I really just want to plow through what firewood we have cut so it doesn't go to waste. I'm throwing huge logs in there and it seems to be working well. There's a boatload more at the base of the hill that I haven't even looked at yet so I'm thinking that's next year.
