Our hydro will be cut off tonight.

Even though we have paid our bill.

Actually, the utility is cutting it off to our street as well as several surrounding streets. Apparently there are important and somewhat urgent repairs to be done. So we'll be without electricity for around three hours. It's good that we aren't TV or gaming addicts. We'll settle down with the candle lantern, have flashlights handy, and probably go to bed early.

Just like our forebears did before civilization became so dependent on what light switches and wall outlets give us.

At least you know it's coming and have some time to prepare, mentally and physically. Even when I know the power is out, I walk in to a dark room and flip the light switch. Some habits are hard to break!

You're right, it's good to know it's coming and that we have time to prepare. I almost forgot that one preparation is to have the crank radio at hand so we can listen to Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap program on CBC.

Our power sent out for about a minute last night; extremely unusual around here. Was just about to get the flashlight when it came back on.

Ew. I hate power outages. I'm not going to lie, it is kind of fun for the first couple minutes but the novelty quickly wears off and boredom sets in pretty fast after that. I remember a few years ago we our power was out for like 9 days it was torture.... and cold. I hope you guys stay warm! Make sure you have lots of blankets and candles and flashlights!

LOL, the OH came home on Friday with a brand new little primus stove and even the fuel for it, all found at Value Village. We have one but two won't hurt. It will be easy to make the first thing I crave as soon as the hydro goes, a cup of tea. I recommend one if you don't have already, you can cook a meal on it.

For whatever reason the outage was rescheduled to tonight. We waited, and waited, and waited, and finally dozed off. We are certainly prepared.

It will be warmer still tonight, about 10C though almost certainly wet. We may get up to 25mm of rain overnight.

Outages can be a pain. We have taken a bit of the unpleasantness out by rehearsing. Once we actually voluntarily shut the hydro off for 24 hours. While it was uncomfortable (it was in a November) we gained some knowledge of the weaknesses in our preparations, and some confidence that we are fairly well prepared.

At least it will be warmer outside. Would be worse if they had done it a few days ago.

We have a Coleman two-burner propane stove and a Coleman white gas stove. The white gas stove currently isn't working so we either need to figure out why, or replace it.

The only thing i would worry about yesterday and today with it being so warm, are the sump pumps not getting power! they're running pretty steady, good amount of rain overnight, and off and on again today. Babysitting the generator with the sumps plugged into it is not fun!. I do for some odd reason, have a surplus amount of fuel for it at home right now. The Playbook is charged up with 3 books, the oil lamps are all full and ready, and the gas fireplaces work (just not the blower parts) without power, as does the cooktop. Water however is an issue. seems there is no way to raise the water (the potable kind, not the runoff stuff!) from the bottom of the well without a very heavy-duty 220v well pump. My little generator will not run it. So I keep large pails in the bathtub as a just-in-case, somewhere around 15 -20 gallons. Would love a cistern.

I don't get bored, way to much waiting to be read, but I do worry. thats a very limited amount of water. and even with the gas fires going, the house gets cool.

At least you know its going to be off, then the surprise and the "i wonder how long its down for" are gone. Ontario hydro has a decent website where you can see their outages, planned and unplanned, and see if someone is on-site doing repairs, along with the cause of the outage and a repair time estimate. But i'm covered by one of the municiple hydro services, no such thing.

Those sound even better but, is it safe to use the propane one in the house? Fumes? In a three day outage one winter we used the little primus outside, and the barbecue. But the primus was faster.

Oh no, we would not use the propane inside. But we (me )expect to be able to boil water or heat home-made soup outside before we (me ) freeze.
