      King Charles Cavalier Spaniel world?

Anyone have any contacts or been involved in the King Charles Cavalier world? We finally decided which small dog we wanted to go with. The plan is to get him sometime in fall/winter of 2015.

Since the breed is prone to a lot of issues, we want to make sure we find a good breeder.

I don't know for sure but I think Charlotte K might know. She has referenced cavaliers in past posts and I always thought she was a breeder or at least, someone involved with the breed. Doesn't hurt to PM her though.

I have one and they are awesome! You won't be sorry.
I am sorry I can not offer any help on a breeder. Our breeder has had some problems and she isn't breeding anymore.
I will be searching for a breeder again someday myself.

One of my dog trainers would have contacts, plus she does stuff with the Cav Rescue if you are interested. You just missed 100+ Cav's which got rescued from being sold at auction by a puppy mill who was folding their operations .... a southern state, but the dogs ended up all over the country.

Now if you were interested in agility I could figure out the breeder I found for a friend of mine who has Cav's .... but I alost certain those puppies only go to performance pet homes.

Cavaliers are great little dogs who grow up to be the size of a Lab puppy. Here is one hint. First, before contacting a breeder, get the name right, including the order of the name, which is more than all the "experts" on Animal Planet Dogs 101 can do. It is Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, or Cavalier for short. Many fanciers other than in parts of the Midwest do not like the nickname Cav or Cavies, as that sounds like a guinea pig or Cavy.

Also note that, given the size difference, one has to use a little common sense and caution when mixing Cavaliers with young or rough Labs: they can break or lose an eye if body slammed. I do not allow most Labs between 4 months and 2 or 3 years loose with Cavaliers, particularly pups. Leashes work wonders at teaching the Labs manners, manners that come in handy with the next Lab pup.

There are a number of Cavalier breeders in your area. You may wish to go to a show, particularly a Cavalier specialty, to talk with them.

Charlotte, can you tell us the difference between Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and King Charles Spaniels? I think in N. America we call the latter English Toy Spaniels?

They are of course related breeds. The
Charlie or English Toy Spaniel has a MUCH shorter muzzle, more like that of a pug. They used to be docked, and can have a genetically short tail, too.

A page in the UK has a link to an article.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels in the UK
then scroll down the left column to this paragraph. The link might work, too.
Many people find it difficult to recognise the difference between Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and King Charles Spaniels. Read our article There Is A Difference

We have more Cavaliers coming into rescue, at least another fifty or so.
Additionally, there are older Cavaliers also looking for homes.

Potion and Bandit's breeder also breeds and shows Cavaliers. She said they are a good mix. Of course, you have to supervise. I've met several breeders who raise and show two breeds. Potion's breeder reasoned that in time she would no longer be able to pick up her labs but wanted to stay involved in shows with a smaller breed. Don't really know too much about the Cavaliers.
