"Unbroken" was recommended to me over the weekend. Apparently I am the only person in the entire universe who hasn't read it. It was also made into a movie I had never heard of.

How about podcasts, is anyone listening to podcasts these days? I have an app on my phone that will let me listen to podcasts while I'm walking Lark or walking on a treadmill or cooking, pretty much anything that isn't too noisy. I can also play them through my computer so I can do some serious time-wasting doing crossword puzzles and listening to a podcast while waiting for the laundry to need some attention or the chicken to finish roasting. They're all free, or at least the ones I listen to all are and run anywhere from maybe 20 minutes to an hour- very convenient for walking a dog IMO.

I haven't been listening too long yet so I'm still finding potential ones to listen to. So far I've enjoyed This American Life, one called Serial about a kid in Baltimore accused and imprisoned for allegedly killing his ex-girlfriend, one called Terrible, Thanks for Asking, my sister recommended the Sex, Death and Money podcasts. Any of you listen to podcasts and have any to recommend?

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Being a soccer fan, I love the Men in Blazers podcast. It’s informative and also very entertaining.

Well, this thread has been neglected for a while, so let's see if anyone has some recommendations for reading and listening.

I listen to a lot of books on CD while driving 6-8 hours to visit the grands or go to the beach, and my latest very favorite has been The Best Cook in the World by Rick Bragg. He talks about his momma and his momma's people, growing up in the south before, during and after the Depression, and the meals and foods they prepared and ate. He talked his mother into sharing some of her recipes and they are a major part of the book. The dishes are woven into his narrative and then he tells how his momma says to prepare them. Butter rolls. What you'll need. How to cook it.

I listened to it on CD and Rick Bragg narrated it himself, which for me adds a welcome touch. My dad grew up in rural West Virginia and I think a lot of the intuitive, no recipe, raise it yourself and prepare it type plain cooking was probably how his mother/grandmother/aunts cooked. I was 9 or 10 when my grandmother died and I can't recall her ever cooking anything but I know she had a taste for groundhog and snapping turtle and grew up in a family of 8 kids in the Appalachians, so somewhere back there must be some cooks like Bragg's momma. I'm not sure I'll be preparing a turkey the way his mother did, rubbed with oil and salt with a full pound of butter put inside the cavity and roasted "until it's done" but I did enjoy the story.

    A Christmas Eve restart.

Listening to Gene Autry sing 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'.

Reading Louise Penny's 'The Cruellest Month' which is one of the Inspector Gamache series. Also very slowly making my way through William T Vollman's 'Carbon Ideologies: No Immediate Danger', the first of two weighty volumes about energy-intensive civilization and climate change.

Has anybody read "Where the Lost Dogs Go"?

It's going to make me cry, isn't it? I just ordered it against my better judgement.

Listening to a wren singing one yard over, a cardinal caroling in the distance, and a gentle breeze rustling the Manitoba Maples' leaves.

smartrock,I someties listen to podcasts by Strong Towns, a group advocating for more walkable, more affordable cities similar to what have been built for centuries. I love this statement.

"Strong Towns takes all the Red State/Blue State “Us vs. Them” nonsense out of the conversation and explores the nuts and bolts of why some towns prosper and many others fail.

"It’s an on-going comprehensive look at what works physically, economically, and culturally.” - iTunes review

I read 'Unbroken' because I'm very interested in WWII history and because I loved the authors' previous book about the horse Seabiscuit. This was a very compelling book about survival and how soldiers can be men at their most beastly. Haven't seen the movie.

Currently reading 'Creole Belle' by James Lee Burke. On a waitlist at the library for a biography about Alexander Hamilton written by Ron Chernow.

Andrew, you and I seem to read many of the same authors, mystery authors anyway. I've read most of the James Lee Burke books but some of his more recent get into a little too much philosophical mumbo jumbo for me sometimes. Still love those with a heavy presence of Clete Purcell though, what a character. I'll look for Strong Towns, sounds intriguing.

SunDance, I haven't read Where the Lost Dogs Go but I'm pretty sure it would make be cry. Let me know how it is.

Currently I'm listening to the 3rd book of the Joe Ide series about a young PI named Isaiah Quintabe (IQ). On a waiting list at the library for the next book of the Memory Man series by David Baldacci. I figured out how to download books from the library into an app called Cloud Library when they have it for a particular book, not all seem to be available. You can keep them for 3 weeks, like regular books. I just downloaded one called Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin that has been on my books to read list for a while now but I just found it available for the Cloud Library. Short stories- always nice to have available for a quick read between other tasks.

I just started reading "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo". It was recommended via an online book club. Old Hollywood glam, secrets and manipulations. So far I am enjoying it.
