You are more important than a turkey.

There was a huge mix up about health insurance after my husband lost his last job. The letter we got in the mail said that we had 60 days to sign on through the Massachusetts site in order to have continuous coverage and it just wasn't true. Plus we kind of pushed it because it looked like there was a job offer coming down the pipe but the people in charge went on vacation and they decided to postpone it until the new year. In short, we wound up getting independent insurance with a January 1st start date. He landed a really great consulting position working from home in the meantime and everything is going great but we're in an insurance coverage gap which is a new experience for me.

So now my husband has shingles again and the doctor called in an antiviral prescription to the pharmacy for him. We ran some errands this afternoon to get him new sheets since he sleeps in the guest room when he has a broken bone or shingles or can't handle my snoring. My husband was telling me that he loves shopping with me because it's fun watching me coupon everything to death and we're having a good time. We head for the pharmacy and he starts to get anxious because we have no insurance.

OK. Remember Christmas Turkey? For those who don't know, Christmas was an actual turkey we had years ago. She hurt her foot and it became infected. Because of the laws regarding livestock, the vet wasn't able to prescribe common antibiotics because she couldn't compromise the turkey's meat even though Christmas was a pet. The prescription wound up being $300. My husband and I wound up in this weird situation at the pharmacy. I was saying no to the prescription, my husband was arguing for it and the pharmacist ended up suggesting that we put the turkey on the prescription plan for low income individuals. Which she was. That turkey never earned a dime. She was more of a homemaker/guard turkey.

Back to the present day. My husband is now making a very healthy sum of money. We haven't even blown through our emergency fund and he's visibly upset about the potential cost of the uninsured prescription. I don't care. I don't think it's an option. That's just life. He says, "What if it's $300?"

We get to the pharmacy and this is the conversation we have.

Pharmacist: We need to update your insurance.
Me: It won't be in effect until January 1st.
Pharmacist: Do you know how much this costs?
    Me: No.
    Pharmacist: It's $202, um,
And she hesitates on the change.
    Me: That's fine.
    My husband: Are you sure?
Me: You are more important than a turkey.

And now we have to change pharmacies . . .

Lol! Your stories crack me up! I remember the turkeys and that specific story about the prescription! Didn't you have several turkeys, all named after major holidays? Christmas, Easter...

We did. Easter was by far the most spectacular turkey we've had. They just don't live very long because they're so big. I think I'm going with midget white turkeys the next time. They're like really big chickens and are built to survive.

Turkey eggs are just so great and I love the personalities of the birds.

How long does a domesticated turkey live? We have turkeys in our backyard but they aren't our pets, they are wild. I love seeing the family of 20 come down from the hill, mill around, and then go back up. Very neat.

I think it's February something but what happened for us is that we signed up after the first of December and everything starts at the first of the next month. The letter from the former employer said that we could sign up any time within a sixty day period and be covered continuously from the date of unemployment but the website in Massachusetts said we couldn't. Basically we delayed just past that November 30th deadline for getting coverage in December so now we're looking at January.

It's not terribly important for us. We're down to a couple of weeks now and we're good to go for next year.
