I went to class
and educated myself about the President's proposal. It's a good one, trying a new approach to work on problems that many people know exist. Regrettably, it's DOA on Capitol Hill.
I'll point out that not every CC student is 18. I was 50 years old.
Of the 74 or so people in my program, perhaps 50 were over 30. Roughly the same number of people were retraining from jobs, sometimes careers, in manufacturing and support services. They lost their jobs because the largest employer where we went to college pulled up stakes (for many reasons) in 2009. Our city hasn't recovered yet. But I digress.
My point is that CCs are a valuable resource in training and retraining people as well as to help people get a start on a four year degree. The proposal looks like a good way to potentially control costs, help people get to and stay in school, train/retrain students and workers.
