Am I not reading this right?? Why would it take 6 years to transfer to a 4 year college from a 2 year college? That seems to be part of the problem, doesn't it? It should take 2 years to get a 2 year degree. If it is taking you 6 and you STILL don't have a degree, you aren't doing it right.

I have a friend that teaches Biology at a community collage. The one around here had dorms and a rec center. She gets students who never attend class and then email asking what they can do to make up for lost points...she seriously has the craziest stories. I'm so glad I teach elementary.
And these are young adults who are PAYING to take classes.

There are hard workers and there are slackers at every level. Kids with learning disabilites (smart kids with things that make it harder to read, listen, study, etc.) are counseled to take a minimum number of full time credits while in college so that they can succeed. I am in favor of training the workers we have to the level we need rather than outsourcing when possible; community college can help with that objective.

Things have changed since I worked my way through school for what I could not cover with scholarships and loans. We do not have the good paying factory jobs I could work at a glass factory. Entry level service work does not pay a living wage. Furthermore, the majority of kids on public schools, for the first time in at least half a decade, are in poverty. There was an article in the Washington Post on that. I think the problem may reside with the 1% after all. The problem is bigger than whether or not college should be free or not. No, I do not have the answer.

I went to class and educated myself about the President's proposal. It's a good one, trying a new approach to work on problems that many people know exist. Regrettably, it's DOA on Capitol Hill.

I'll point out that not every CC student is 18. I was 50 years old. Of the 74 or so people in my program, perhaps 50 were over 30. Roughly the same number of people were retraining from jobs, sometimes careers, in manufacturing and support services. They lost their jobs because the largest employer where we went to college pulled up stakes (for many reasons) in 2009. Our city hasn't recovered yet. But I digress.

My point is that CCs are a valuable resource in training and retraining people as well as to help people get a start on a four year degree. The proposal looks like a good way to potentially control costs, help people get to and stay in school, train/retrain students and workers.

I agree with a lot of the above. I wish Obama's plan was viable and better thought-out, but at least it's starting conversations like this!

I wish the plan was a bit more comprehensive as well, but it's good that this is part of the national conversation at least. Of course, it has zero chance of passing in this Congress.
