For those of you who have joined since the crash, DH and I gutted and redid our kitchen. What a project! Since I'm not the best at lifting, removing the tile floor was my chore.
Now we are gutting the bathroom and the floor is my chore again. We had put in a ceramic tile baseboard years ago. A pain to take off but not too bad. Started the floor today. UGH!!!
When we bought the house, the bathroom was carpeted. The little old lady who lived here was very arthritic and apparently the carpeting helped her. We tore it out immediately. Underneath, linoleum, riddled with holes and stained. Ran out and bought cheap peel-and-stick tile to cover it and have a clean floor. Hated the pattern but it served it's purpose. Finally found another peel-and-stick I loved, heavier gauge. What did I do, put it on top of the other two layers. Had a DUH moment doing that.
So, today I'm using the heat gun to peel off two layers of peel-and-stick and a layer of linoleum. The dang glue is all over me; finally had use WD40 to dissolve it. It did makes my hands soft, LOL. Am heating up the top layer of the linoleum and peeling it off; the paper stays behind. Mastered the technique of getting the paper and glue off doing the kitchen; not a bad job, just tedious.
Finished the area all around the toilet. Called that thing everything but a toilet. Got the heat vent disassembled and cleaned. Will repaint it. What's left to do is the bigger part of the floor but much easier than crawling under a toilet.
Am looking for a new vanity. The one we have is 72" long. Would love to have one that looks more like a piece of furniture, i.e. with legs. Still in the searching mode on that. The tile surround for the tub will be my chore too. DH gets to smash up the cast iron tub and haul it out. He is going to replace what we think will probably be sheetrock behind the tub with cement board. The sheetrock in this house is 3/4 thick and then a coat of plaster over it. Makes for more work but this house was build solid.
Taking tonight off and using the hot pad on my back.

Gosh Fran. That sounds like a lot of work! I would be heating up more then my back if I took on that project. Advil anybody? I'm sure it will be worth it when you're done! My new favorite place to shop for home remodeling items is wayfair.com. I've picked up lots of nice things there.

That is a lot of work! We took off wallpaper in our old bathroom and I wondered if it would be less work to tear down the walls and hang new sheetrock
For the vanity, have you thought about looking at used furniture stores? Perhaps an old dresser or something. You'll probably have to tweak it a little, but it would look like furniture and be unique.
Oh wow! Lots of work. Take care of yourself and post pics.
You are brave. Lots and lots of work.
Good luck
The bathroom is a big job ( ) and in some ways more inconveniencing than the kitchen. We did both of ours as well. Late at night or in the middle of the night we were glad, with the bathroom, that our lot is big, well treed at the back and there are no houses behind us.
Go slowly, don't hurt something. Ugh, cement board, it stinks when you saw it.
Have been looking at both new and old pieces for the vanity. Saw one I kinda liked at HD but darn, I prefer to see them in person.
This entire house had wall paper and that's one of the first projects we tackled. What a chore. Paper came off without too much problem but getting the residual glue off, a pain.
That does sounds like a LOT of work! We are currently in the process of renovating our home as well. Just completed the kitchen including all of the flooring downstairs after 3 winters and boy, was that ever tough! We did (and are) doing all of the work ourselves. It's nice to take a small break, and look at the amazing progress you've completed so far! Good luck and share some photos!
Oy, that sounds like lots of work! Having done several bathrooms, I can say they can be a big pain! Just an idea on the heat vent, if it's a standard size and not a particularly "pretty" or special vent cover, you might consider changing it to a plastic one, bathrooms can be fairly humid, and it won't be affected like a metal one is.
I too like the idea of a piece of furniture for your vanity-I've seen several dressers used that way, some with vessel sinks and fun taps (one or two with spigot that come out of the wall above and behind the vessel), as well as with "normal" inset sinks (your very handy DH would have to do some interior re-working of the dresser for that especially)
Bet you'll have a bathroom to be proud of just like your gorgeous new kitchen is!
You wouldn't believe how I do chores like that. I call my son and ask, "can you come over and help me do. . . ?" The next thing you know he says, "I'll get it, Dad, just get out of here a while"
