Yeah...that's not wood rot you're seeing...it's guano seeping through.

I'd be watching the house in warmer weather to see if any critters were coming and going...cool if it's not your house. That room's got to be nasty regardless of whether or not they're still there (and why would they want to leave a cozy "cave"?).

This isn't the first of this type of story I've heard about the historic homes in the neighborhood but it's by far the worst. When we had our chimney cleaned last year, the guy we use told my husband a couple of doozies, one of which was that a guy decided to install a wood furnace in his living room and has it venting into the wall. Can you imagine? That's a death sentence. There are two homes that have broken drain pipes on upper floors and the solution was to stop using the toilets they're connected to.

I had this fantasy that we could invest in historic fixups in the future. Now I'm thinking there's as good a chance as not that we'd have to tear it down if we bought one.

Right? I think an inspector would condemn it. Twenty years! I freaked out about some mold in our basement and had the entire room ripped out years ago. I had nightmares that it was eating the house. When I heard the neighbor's story, I just said to my husband, "That house is dead." He was so unnerved that he went straight to our attic and fixed a cracked window pane that I've been going on about for the last year. Our imaginations are getting the better of us.
