Do people normally put a person's name on a gravestone before they're dead? A relative put a spouse's name on the gravestone of her husband after he died but the spouse was very much alive. There's no death date but still, am I wrong that I think that is just bizarre?

Yep. My mom passed away and dad had his name, date of birth inscribed on the headstone. Seen it on many headstones in the cemetery.

Well that's a relief. There was some weird stuff going on after his death and the relative in charge of the finances (and bought the headstone) refused to hold a funeral or memorial service for him because it would cost money so I assumed she was trying to save something on her inheritance by tacking on his spouse.
Yup, common. I remember the weirdest stuff. Remember a few years ago when everyone was freaking about Y2K? The change from 1999 to 2000. Some had gone so far as putting the 19 on the end date as it was easier while the stone was in the shop.

At the cemetery where most of my family is buried, they have crypts. When those are purchased the name and birth year are engraved and the year updated when the person dies.

Very common. My grandparents did it. When the first grandparent died the other would add his/her name to the headstone. My uncle died 13 years ago and my aunt (or her son) added her name to his headstone and she is still very much alive. My parents ordered their headstone and have it up in the cemetery and are not expected to died for at least the next 20-30 years or so I hope!

Have seen it many times. Had seen it in cemeteries but became more familiar with it when my folks were planning their final arrangements and looking into options. Many people buy plots well before they pass and then the marker is placed when one dies with their details and the name and birthdate of the surviving spouse.

My dad passed away in 1992, my mother is still with us at 96 and yes her name and DOB are on the stone next to his. Kind of creepy but common I guess.
