DH and I both called our respective Dad's parents Mamaw and Papaw. His Mom's parents were Mammy and Pappy. My Mom's parents were Grandmother and Grandaddy. My sister's kids call her MIL Ninny. My stepmom is Grandma Linda. Funny how there are so many names for grandparents.

My parents and their parents were called Nana and Grandpop. Since my name is Nancy I did NOT want to be called Nana, so when my first grandchildren were born I decided I wanted to be called Gramma and Barney would be Grampa. Only the kids ended up changing them to Mama and Papa and that was ok with me I loved the way they said it. All of my grandchildren rarely see any of their other grandparents, most of whom live close enough to visit, but don't. One set of grandparents live in Spain so they can be forgiven for not visiting much. So pretty much, Mama and Papa are all they are used to saying.

No human kids in my household, but for my brothers kids....
Paternal side - Grandpa Hey & Grandma Julie - Not sure where the "Hey" part comes from, can only surmise that every time he walked in the house he'd announce his arrival by saying "Hey" or if Gregg was too difficult for the kids to say.
    Maternal side - Mana & Pop-pop

We pretty much let our parents decide what they wanted to be called. I agree, crazy that a parent wouldn't allow Oma and Opa. I would've been fine with pretty much anything my parents or inlaws chose.

Sundance, she may indeed have age issues, but Mimi is an acceptable grandparent name in current circles, I think because, as I mentioned above, it comes from Grammy.
Ahhhh...very interesting. That may have been Yvonne's basis for choosing that particular name...but she was very vocal about no "grand" thing.

    Thank you!

My grandkids all call me Bamps which comes from when one of them was little, he got ornery and would not say "gramps" instead he started the tradition of calling me Bamps. All the Gkids call my wife, "Nonna" which is italian for grandma and that is also what my wife called her paternal grandmother, who was an italian born immigrant.
