So sorry to see it go, but the big maple in the front yard was taken down today. It was bittersweet. One side had been chopped off by and power company and there were multiple splits forming at limbs, some over the house. There was no choice. The tree company was excellent, taking it down piece by piece, careful of even the hostas planted directly under it. After looking at the base of the trunk, the tree man said it was 70+ years old. They did everything including grinding down the stump and leaving me some great mulch. All the smaller branches were chopped up, the bigger pieces they had a market for, wood workers, and maple like this is in high demand. I joked with them that the only thing they didn’t do was vacuum the front yard; I can hardly find any sawdust. The lead man was an arborist and gave me great advice on a new tree so we are going with a Japanese maple. He also gave me the name of the tree nursery they work with which is close. He wants us to let him know when we have the new tree in and he’ll come by and check it out and keep an eye on it as it grows.
Before. You can see how one sided it is.

Even a robin came in to say goodbye.

After. The house looks so bare. Going out tomorrow to pick out a tree.
Well, the picture posting did not go as planed but if you click on the link, you'll see the pictures. I think, ugh.
Wow - the tree was huge! Having a tree that long is surely going to be missed - glad you're getting a new one. It sounds as if they did a wonderful job, though.

That tree was HUGE! No wonder you're gonna miss it. Oh, you're replacing it with an Acer palmatum! (Don't get too impressed, I just looked it up)

They did do a great job! It's hard to see a tree go. The landscape is just so different. Our next door neighbor still talks about the time that my MIL took down her huge oak almost thirty years ago.
The death of a tree is a sad, sad thing.
So sad. But glad to hear you are going to replace with another. Have you thought of what you want? Love my dogwood.

I think you will like the Japanese Maple. We have one in our front yard, nice contrast against the usual maple and oaks.

Big ole tree! Take pics of the new one for us!
Went out and mowed the front yard this afternoon. Usually a nice shady job. WOW, it was hot work.
Gonna buy as big a tree as we can afford. We need the shade with the big bay window in the front.
