    OH is Home from Hospital

Yeah, you didn't know he was IN hospital did you? It's been a whirlwind. I will try to make a long story short.

OH got itchy, we blamed the new shampoo and the new laundry detergent and his sensitive red head skin. He got worse, he turned yellow, his bilirubin counts went through the roof, his GP said go to Emerge ( this was on April 13) as it's the fastest way to get him in for an MRI. MRI showed a small mass between pancreas and bilary duct, blocking the duct. Arranged for surgery in Toronto, got in early because of a cancellation. Had the Whipple Procedure done May 5. Whipple is done whether a mass is cancer in this area or not. We learned a week after the surgery that the mass was cancer. Surgeon feels he got it all, may not even need to have chemo or radiation but that will be decided in two weeks when the drain in his pancreas comes out.

Whipple Procedure: Effects, Success Rate, and More

OH came home yesterday. He's very weak, sore and has lost a lot, a lot of weight he did not need to lose. Home Health Care Nurse is coming for her first visit today and will set up a schedule to visit and check on the drain and other incisions. The surgery was laparascopic but there is about a 4 " incision where the organs removed came out. The surgery took 6 hours.

Friends and neighbours were great looking after Oban and the cats. We stayed at a motel near St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto in order to be sure to be there for the early morning pre-op and surgery dates, which were May 4 and 5. Friends had to come several times those two days. Fortunately Oban's ortho rehab and his internal medicine issues were over and under control and we'd quit the trips to the distance away Vets for those.

    Ay yi, yi.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Ay yi, yi is right! That's a lot going on in a short amount of time. A Whipple is a big surgery; no wonder he is weak and lost weight.

Sending prayers that all the nasty C is gone and he recovers quickly.
