Thanks Pink. Did that item show a price of $73 when you first found it? Now it is out of stock and no price shows. I'm in Canada and what with the horrible exchange rate right now, and shipping fees, and duty, it cost nearly triple the cost to get a lovely, lovely piece of tapestry fabric that I ordered a few weeks ago. So I figure it will be cheaper, at $200, to get the local store to do it with recovery disks. I will look into that on the local Kijiji though, just to see.

Apparently full support of Windows 7 stopped earlier this year but some kind of support will go on till 2020. I guess I should look into just what that continuing support entails.

Snowshoe, it's available all over the place. Walmart has it.

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1 64-bit Operating System OEM System Build version (PC) - Walmart.com

$89.98 USD, not sure of current exchange rates, so can't give you the price, but you can certainly find it. And not have to pay shipping, either.

It was in the "From 70.00" part, but as Sue said, you can find it anywhere. I'm sure some sort of electronics store like Best Buy carries copies as well. If you're buying from the web, just make sure you don't buy a used copy. Also, don't buy an "upgrade" copy either. You need the full software, not just an upgrade.

Edit: Here's a copy from amazon.ca Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium: Amazon.ca: Software

If you go under "4 new from CDN$ 160", the first one is new with free shipping. Btw, the link I posted last night did sell out (probably after I posted it with my awful luck :P)

You may not know about Tigerdirect.ca. My company's former IT guy turned me on to them. I've bought a few pieces of hardware from them and been satisfied. They also sell software and have Win 7 at $14.97 + shipping. Here is the product page.

Well how about that, I thought Tiger Direct closed all their Canadian stores? A friend of the OH works in IT and said that. Maybe she meant the bricks and mortar stores because the only one I know of, near my Mum's house, did close. I will check them. Near me we have Canada Computer which is pretty good but when I googled no Canadian distributer of Windows 7 came up. Going to look again though.

LOL, Mr Kleb, you missed a digit. It's $114.97. Don't worry, I knew enough to figure $14.97 couldn't be right.

ETA: Hey, it's $109 at Canada Computers. But still, I have recovery disks.

I thought that was too good to be true.

I'm bringing up this older thread as I've came across some info about Windows 10, that also unfortunately applies to Windows 7 and 8.

Windows 10 has some serious privacy issues. Which to me, explains why Microsoft is deploying it for "free." And there's no way to disable it.
    Link:
Windows 10 is Great, Except for the Parts That Are Terrible

The other issue is four particular upgrades to Win 7 and 8. Microsoft is installing this same telemetry thing, and your privacy (and bandwidth usage) will become severely compromised. At least with Win 7/8 you can refuse and uninstall updates. Can't with Win 10.

Just Like Windows 10, Windows 7 and 8 Also Spy on You s How to Stop Them
    The updates in question are:
KB3068708 – This update introduces the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices.
KB3022345 (replaced by KB3068708) – This update adds the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to in-market devices.
    KB3075249
    – This update adds telemetry points to the User Account Control (UAC) feature in order to collect data on elevations that come from low integrity levels.
KB3080149 – This package updates the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices.
These recent updates released by Redmond install the "Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service" that is the most controversial component of the Microsoft's newest operating system.
Once installed, the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service immediately begins phoning home to Microsoft even if privacy controls are enabled – apparently with no option to stop it.

Thanks, Sue. I just uninstalled those 4 on my desktop. I appreciate your post!

What's "interesting" is that 3068708 automatically reinstalled when I hit restart...and my settings for updates were changed from "check and notify me" to "install automatically". So I had to fool with that one a second time. It seems to have stayed off but, sure enough, I got a notification that it was ready for me to install. (at least my preferred update setting didn't get switched on me again)

Looks like we're going to have to be careful about what we install again...I don't like it when Microsoft gets sneaky.

Thanks for the heads up on your issue. I had to go back and check to see if my settings had changed and if it had reinstalled. It hadn't, fortunately.

Microsoft also has a keylogger in Windows 10, but that one can be disabled. Grrrr. Makes me want to go Linux.

This is why I'm not recommending Windows 10 to anyone (I don't care that I haven't tried it yet - I don't like that it "stalks" you more than the other operating systems do!).

I know that it's expensive, but I recommend Mac OS X. To me, it was easier to learn than any version of Windows I've used. Plus, your hardware isn't "outdated" in a year and your system continues to receive updates for many years to come; Apple is still supporting machines from late 2008. They also provide software updates for a year or so after your OS is no longer supported. But by the time that happens, you're ready to buy another machine. I'm still running strong with my 2011 MacBook Pro - working as perfect as it did on day 1!

If Mac isn't your thing, Linux is another great option too. I haven't had a chance to really sit down and use it, but from what I've heard, it's an excellent alternative to Windows.

I used to be a huge Windows advocate, but not so much anymore. Windows XP was their last great operating system. Such a shame. Windows 8 and Windows 10 really did it in for them.
