the light pollution is so noticeable now. growing up, so easy to see more constellations.
I was blissfully happy when I went to that WC trial 2 weekends ago - parked the camper, took Scout out into the field for a moonlit stroll, and then sat just looking at the sky, and hearing....nothing. no cars, no background industrial noise. then the real sounds start to creep in. little unseen critters quietly making their way thru the grass. the odd bird squawking. owls, lots of hooting, near and far. and the sky, wow, the sky... milky way, just looking up and seeing how many stars there actually are, amazing.

that lightpollution experiment sounds very interesting.

But things like rain and snow accumulation he had to do by hand; how much snow fell over night was measured each morning and again at 3:00 to see how much had melted or evaporated or compacted.

At first he had to do temperature himself, manually, as well and we were provided with a mercury thermometer . . .

. . . we have the Stevenson screen in our backyard. It houses an alcohol thermometer now but folks get such a kick out us having our own Stevenson screen. Actually, if I remember correctly, I think OH built it himself in the first place from plans provided to him at the nursery from Environment Canada.
That's very interesting! Fayes' mom was the official reader of the stream flow gauge at the river near their farm.

    What is a Stevenson screen?

Those two things were what made that night at Enchanted Rock magical. Only a few ranch lights for miles around, a few cattle bawling. Otherwise it was the stars, the moon, the wind barely sighing, that owl. Dark and quiet are so scarce and so precious.
