"Advanced Labrador Breeding" by Mary Roslin Williams which was reprinted as "Reaching for the Stars". You can find copies of both, but expect to pay big$$$$$$$.
Amazon has used copies for $140, new at $463.
Hello,
I was just wondering if anybody could recommend books on breeding Labrador Retrievers (specifically). There are plenty of books out there on breeding dogs (in general) but I was just wondering if there are any geared towards Labs.
I don't plan on breeding my dog specifically, but I am very much interested in learning about this.
Thanks guys.
EDIT : My apologies guys, I just realized that the OT forum is not the appropriate forum section for my post. I would've deleted the thread or moved it to the appropriate section, but I didn't see the option under the "Thread Tools".

I guess it depends on what you want to know. As a breeder I find the book by Heather Fone and Carol Coode very helpful.

Not really sure what I want to know on the subject, as I don't know anything about it to begin with (if that makes any sense). I'm just looking to learn as much about
breeding them as possible.
I purchased a book called : The Everything Labrador Retriever Book: A Complete Guide to Raising, Training, and Caring for Your Lab. It's a good read....has a lot of information in it, except for breeding info.
Then I thought I'd like to learn about that as well, but I have no starting point on the subject. I'm sure no one book has everything in it, but I figured I'd ask for some feedback from the community so I could get the book that seems to be popular amongst those who have experience in this type of subject.
The Coode book and the Wiles-Fone book aren't scientific, but a lot of the nuances about breeding labs is about the pedigrees, what you look for in a puppy and adult dog, etc.

The Ultimate Labrador Retriever (Howell Dog Book of Distinction): Heather Wiles-Fone: 9780764526398: Amazon.com: Books
If you want some more "Science", get the Myra Savant Harris books. Not Labrador specific, but many breed clubs including our Lab club have paid to have Myra do a seminar for their club. Good info.
Canine Reproduction And Whelping: A Dog Breeder's Guide: Myra Savant-harris: 9781929242375: Amazon.com: Books
This book was also supposed to be a good "go to" breeding book. Not Lab specific.
Canine Reproduction: The Breeder's Guide: Phyllis A. Holst: 9781577790280: Amazon.com: Books
I also find this website very helpful for breeding and whelping questions. Not Lab specific.

But while I mention a few of these are not lab specific, I have used them when breeding and whelping, so they are extremely helpful. The thing is breeding and whelping is the same no matter the breed.

Are you more interested in the mechanics of breeding/whelping or in the deep knowledge of the breed that goes in to choosing a quality bitch and ideal (for her) stud?
