So it turns out there's about a 50/50 split with the attendance numbers from my office. The no spouse thing is just a cost cutting measure. Some people actually like spending Friday nights with their spouse and others fear the duelling banjos.
We do a formal dinner and casino night afterwards, and we use our money "winnings" to enter in a raffle for prizes. I am strongly encouraged to go as I am a supervisor, so I usually go.
ETA: We all get 1 guest. If I didn't get to have Jake come too, I would be at home, in my PJ's.

I've been on both sides of this: The reluctant office party attendee, and, more recently, a co-owner/manager planning and throwing the office party. It sucks that employees don't appreciate the party, given the cost, but I get it.
I once worked a job with a lot of people who I really didn't care for. It was a physician's office environment where the people I worked with would make completely unethical decisions and then brag about what they did. I only worked at the place for 6 months, and happened to work there during the month of December. Everybody was totally excited to go to the Christmas party, and employees who attended that party got paid for a full day, if you didn't attend you got paid for half a day. People were stunned that I wasn't going, not even for the pay. I just couldn't stand spending more time with those people than I needed to.
The company I work for now doesn't have a Christmas party, but if they did, I would absolutely attend. White girl dancing and all.
Perhaps I am showing my age, or maybe not an Aus thing, what is 'white girl dancing'? Tx
Most times, I've genuinely liked the people I worked with and wanted to go to out of the office events with them (Christmas parties, pinnics, etc). A couple events were outside work days, but most were held work days where we got the afternoon off to go (didn't go, you were expected to work). Other times were when I was working in contract (temporary) positions, I would have preferred not to go. I didn't know most people and they were always after hours to not impact the people we were working for. However, I always made an effort to go because networking was so important when you needed to look for your next contract assignment.
I definitely prefer the more casual pot luck, going out for luck or an afternoon activity just with people you work with versus after hours stuff with family or guests. They only go for me and it's awkward since they don't know most of the people.
