This is way more humane than many people would think is necessary. Feral cats are a big problem in some areas. They spread disease (among themselves and to our domesticated pets), spray, dig, and are loud. They can make squirrels, racoons, coyotes, and other nuisance wildlife seem pleasant in comparison. To some, the idea of capturing, spaying/neutring, and releasing a feral cat sounds as nonsensical as doing the same to control the squirrel population. And you can be fined in some places for feeding feral cats.

It's done, Joey was snipped today. Vet charged me $80 and he got to keep all of his ear. The OSPCA would have charged $67 so that's very little difference.

Got him in the trap this morning, sure we are the only source of food he has so he had no food since last night. Slit, snip, a bit of tying off inside, no stitches, he's back home in our garage where he has a warm house, food and water.

Thank you for taking care of yet one more feral kitty. and now he can't contribute to more feral kitties, yay for you and your DH!
Do you think with all this exposure to good people he may become not-so-feral? as in, adoptable? or worse case, a wanted, cared for and valued barn cat for someone?

That's what I would like but he'd have to come inside, I think, so I could force him and there's just no more room. We'll see though. He's not as skittish as even Lexie was and she turned out to be a pet.

Agree with Scoutpout, thank you. He was snipped so won't contribute more feral kitties, and he got to keep all of his ear.

Thank you for taking care of Joey! I care for (currently) 5 feral kitties that have been dropped off near my home or left behind by ignorant people. I TNR, (they have access to heated boxes in my small garage/storage building), feed 2x's daily and take them to the vet when needed. I recently homed a sweet mama and her babies, I know how thankless, yet rewarding, it is to care for these sweet souls.

Five? Oh my, good for you. And how lucky to find homes for the Mama and the babies. We have two regulars, Joey and Chinny Chin Chin, and possibly a third, a Tom who is very thin and extremely cautious. We might see him once every couple of months.

How do you heat your boxes? Ours are in the garage but the garage is not heated. So far we have been able to keep the cats from freezing body parts off but I bet they are still cold. The OH is kind of leery of putting a heat source in the garage for fear of malfunction.

I found really nice indoor/outdoor heating pads for the floor of their boxes at Drs. Foster and Smith. They were a little pricey but worth their weight in gold, they keep their boxes nice and toasty! I saw many people suggesting to make the boxes out of plastic storage containers, using styrofoam for insulation and straw for bedding. My DH went a little crazy making the boxes out of wood, wrapped in Tyvex with real foam insulation, they are really nice and hold the heat well. The last few mornings have been in the 20's and when I go out to feed them breakfast everyone comes out all sleepy and warm, they are so cute! I also got a heated water/food dish for winter to keep their water unfrozen and I did use straw for the bedding. The small garage/storage building is at the top of my driveway, connected to our house, we put a kitty door on the the garage so they can go in and out as they please. They are all becoming very tame and used to people and dogs, pregnant mama was pretty easy to catch when she came around this summer and I realized she was pregnant, she was obviously someone's kitty, she was such a sweet, trusting girl. I honestly think she wanted help and a home, she never once asked to go back out once she was in. My mom took her and one of her pretty babies and they are living the life now, all of them are, they went to really great homes. I hope to get this current crew socialized and homed before spring, they are coming around slowly but surely.

My DH said if the heating pads had not worked as well he would have put a wall mounted propane heater in that garage like the one he has in his big garage/shop at the back of our property. So far the heating pads have worked really well in the boxes he built.

My vet is awesome, he neuters, checks them over good, worms and vaccinates each kitty for $35 each. I am so thankful for the time he puts in helping me to help these babies!

My OH is the same, has built boxes, some quite elaborate, and did one out of a plastic garbage can. All lined with styrofoam, stuffed with straw and some wool sweaters. These were outside, raised up from the snow, but now they are in the garage. They are warm and toasty in there now but we have had the odd -45C overnight in winters. He put an electric heater in the garage but I will look into the Foster and Smith stuff.

We didn't vaccinate or worm. Even the OSPCA says with ferals, what's the point? They'll catch mice or whatever again and just get worms again. Rabies is controversial, the people here don't do it but I know lots of places do. I can see if it's a feral colony like the one at our Canadian Parliament Buildings. But here they are able to stay much more wild and we can't touch them, yet. Still hoping. Wow, that's a really good price your Vet gives you.
