    I'm So Smart. LOL

I'm not just smart, I'm getting smarter and smarter.

The cats have a nice, oval wicker basket bed on our wide front window sill. I put an old down pillow in it but it spilled out and the cats ended up sleeping in a hollow in the middle with practically no soft pillow under them at all. So I made some nice covers to match our living room colours to fit to the oval to cover the pillow with. Smart, huh? The cover keeps the pillow in place.

Then I realized there were some pillow shams in my living room colours at the thrift store at less than I'd paid for the fabric to make mine. I traced my oval, sewed, turned them right side out - and that part was tricky due to my oval being about the same width as the sham opening.

Then I thought, why can't I just sew my oval on top of the sham, leave the sham rectangular, the corners will hang out but the oval will still shape the pillow. So I did that, even easier.

See? I got smarter and smarter. LOL, yeah it depends on the base level I started with doesn't it? I just put a rectangular one on, it looks really good.

Oh, how we learn by trial. Sounds like you came to an excellent solution.

Can't remember a particular instance, but there are many instances when sewing that I said the heck with instructions and found a better, easier way.

Today trying to help DH get ready for the snow coming in tonight meant he had to get the snow blower out of the shed and into the garage. He had stored the rubber lawn waste garage cans in the garage and I figured I would get them out and into the garden shed all the way across the lawn. Just a little too heavy to pick up right now so I employed my trusty cane. Not the fastest but the job got done.

That's on the agenda for us today too. Getting the snowblower out of storage. We've had several reprieves (I call them disappointments) and the up to 20 cm of snow in the forecast three times has not arrived. Can't use the snowblower at first anyway, have to pack the gravel down first. Fran, don't try to do too much. It's amazing how just moving one part of the body in resistance can torque another part.

THE SNOW IS HERE!!!!!!! dad was up today for a visit and dinner (and to try and fix my fireplace, but thats another story), and when i got home from Dead Duck Day (field training) about 2pm, he had stuffed the lawn tractor under the garage stairs and pulled out the snow blower. Hasn't started it, but hopefully it behaves for me. And then right before dinner, he helped me stash all the hanging pots and move the planters and lawn furniture on the deck, ready for winter. Some of the plants are (well i guess were now...) flowering! Just in time!

It really is spectacular out there right now. soooo bright with the snow reflecting all the lights (did i mention i took advantage of that heat wave we had last week to get the front lights up? they require a ladder, so thats done, but the back lights aren't yet), and coating all the trees and bushes with nature's "flocking" too bad the camera doesnt quite do it justice!

hmm, thread drift... so much for the smarter and smarter....

Yes, we got snow too. I'd say not quite 10 cm so not enough to ski on. And it's just above 0C right now so very mushy snow. In the middle of the night and after most of the snow had fallen we were wakened by continuous whoomp, whoomp, whoomp as it began to fall off the trees in clumps and hit the roof over the bedroom.

The only thing OH says is left to do outside is put our planters in the ground and cover them with leaves. Many of the fillers plants will survive the winter that way and I just have to thin, trim and replant them next spring.

Did your Dad stay the night? I hope he doesn't have far to drive. The roads will be slippery. I'm glad Oban and I visited my Aunt yesterday.

I tried for 2 years taking a few of the pots (they're big and heavy!) into the garage to see if the Spikes and the Dusty Millars would over-winter. not so good results, so i've saved my back and given up. I have had a couple Dusty Millars last even with being exposed all winter. I have one big pot at the office, and that one i bring into the hangar, and tuck it in a back corner, near an outside door where its rather cold. Just light watering over the winter, and usually the Spike, Dusty Millar, and sometimes one or 2 other flowering things survive.

Dad and mum drove back down to Brantford around 7:30 Saturday evening, and we didn't start seeing snow till almost 9:30, so safely home. They left this morning for my brother's place, takes 2 days, they really should do it in 3, but they hate paying for the hotel. At least it looks like decent driving weather for them all the way down. Last year they were trying to get down there right when Buffalo had that MAJOR snow storm. They even headed out, and got told that if they crossed the border, they wouldn't be able to get anywhere, so they came back, and stewed for 2 days and finally took off west thru Detroit into the next storm! I know they really wanted to get down to be with my brother, but sheesh... one more day and it would have been much safer driving.
