    "Comtemporary Antique Yellowlegs"

    Aye Mates,
Now that I have shared me two dimensional works with ye, here is some three dimensional work in wood. I carved this piece several years ago when I still was making decoys. Done in a "contemporary antiques style" the yellowlegs gunning decoy has a body / head of northern Atlantic white cedar, the splined bill is black walnut as is the leg stick (that wood specie chosen for added strength), the eyes are bronze tacks chemically "aged" to a nice patina. The piece was finished in artist's oils and mounted on a hand selected piece of driftwood that reminded me of flowing water.

Awesome! When I referred to your hand previously I meant in painting. Now I see that you are indeed multitalented.

    POPTOP,
Thank you for ye kind words Mate. When I draw, I take a blank sheet o' paper and fill in empty space with things that look like a bird.

When I carve, I take a block of wood and remove everything that doesn't look like a bird. LOL. That's me creative process in a nutshell.

Hah. Yes, a sentiment often (but incorrectly) attributed to Michelangelo. Still, it works for carving (not so much for the plastic arts...).

    Very nice bird!

    Abulafia,
Much appreciated. I recently received feedback from a viewer of this Russell Burr decoy drawing that owns a 1910 Parker 20 gauge shotgun once owned and hunted with by Burr. The same gent also owns a minature curlew that was carved by Russell Burr. Interestingly Russell Burr the nephew of Elijah Burr died the same year I was born sixty years ago. Russell Burr was known for his miniature carvings.

That's incredible!! I've had some fun when I built a few guitars, taking off some wood on the heads to reveal the name and designs for the persons it was to belong to.
