When I was younger, I enjoyed all kinds of music. But as I get older (ugh, just turned 60) I find myself listening to the music that my parents enjoyed -- Englebert Humperdink, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams. It's very comforting and brings back such good memories.

Have you noticed how a lot of the commercials on TV today use oldies music from the 60's and 70's?

When I need to clean my house, meaning, I need some music to keep me energized, I turn to the Motown hits of my teen years. And I sing along with them, sometimes throwing in a few twirls as if I was one of the Temptations.

Otherwise I listen to mostly older songs, even if reworked by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga or K.D. Lang. Beach music, James Taylor, Van Morrison, bluegrass like Chris Thile. Not so much country or classical, definitely not metal or rap- music to kill people by.

I love pop punk, punk rock (especially late 90s-early 00s), classic rock, you get the idea. I'm the person who will scream the words as loud as possible at rock concerts, play air guitar, etc. Pretty much scarred my friend when we went to a concert for my favorite band back in November. I had no voice left, my feet hurt, and I was rocked out.

I can tolerate *some* country, but most of it sounds the same to me. I love love love 70-80's music even though that was about 10-20yrs before I was even born. My parents (dad especially) was/is always blasting the 70's/80's. The SiriusXM 80's on 8 channel is awesome. I love listening to The Bridge as well (old soft rock, 70s folk rock, etc.).

Oh, and don't even get me STARTED on crap...er...I mean rap...

Hah. I like a lot of rap and hiphop; mainly older stuff (PE, etc.), but I think Eminem's great, and also, much more recently, Macklemore. Rap / Hiphop can be trash (as all music can), but it is one of the few modern genres that engages actively with social and political themes, and I like it for that.

I listen to a lot of classical—Bach, Saint Saens, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Mozart.

Also some Blues and Ragtime. I am not a fan of most Jazz, esp modern. Django Reinhardt. I am a fan of Greek jazz, or rhembetika. And klezmer.

For pop / rock, I prefer The Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd. Bowie (whatever category you'd put him in). For more modern stuff, Soundgarden, The Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys. Then some things that veer toward punk.

I know a lot about Hawai'ian music, and could name names, but that might get obscure. Though this is a song by Izzy (probably the Hawaiian singer most people know), about the namesake of Hoku:

Iz ~ Hokulea Star of Gladness - YouTube

Edited: "Hokule'a," Hoku's full name (not her AKC name), is the Hawaiian name for Arcturus. It is the "Star of Gladness" because it was the main navigational star, which the Polynesians used to find their way home. Most specifically, on the route from Tahiti to the Hawaiian Islands.

Like you Barry581, I am a huge Springsteen fan- just saw him this week at Madison Square Garden. There is no such thing as a bad Springsteen concert, his shows are phenonamal; I've lost track of how many times I've seen him.

I remember my first album purchase, Beatles Abbey Road. Which progressed on to the B52s, Psychedelic Furs and Pete Townsend. I listen to mostly Alternative music, like Alt Nation on XM Radio. Or First Wave. I was a college radio DJ for a number of years, fed by my "devotion" to REM, the Cure, Echo & the Bunnymen.

Now I'm listening to bands like Alt-J, Twentyone Pilots, Grimes, Jack White, Awolnation...

And I blame a particular Cure concert on the Pier in NYC in the late 80's for my loss of hearing now...

Yep, there's no such thing as a bad Springsteen song.

People who like the big band sound might want to listen to Frank Sinatra Live at The Sands hotel in Las Vegas, about 1965. Count Basie and his band provided the musical support. The show was arranged and conducted by Quincy Jones, who among many, many other accomplishments produced 'Thriller.'

My first LP was a Best of B.B. King. That was also the first concert I went to, I was 14 I think. The first rock concert I went to was Bob Seger (I vividly remember that he wore a red sequined jumpsuit!) opening for Styx.
    Andrew, Faye, Fitzi, and Lucy

Not gone, only gone on ahead - Bruno, Rex, BoJo, Kendal, Kingsley, Moonpie, Avis, Corndog, Stella, and now Achilles
