Acceptable to Wear Long Underwear as Clothing Out in Public?

Guess I am well headed to Old Fogey status. At a hamburger joint recently the waitress, 20ish, was wearing tights that looked for all the world like my wool blend long underwear. The same gray with exposed outside stitching. That's all she had on for bottoms, with a short top that, heaven help me, could have been a lightweight underwear too. I won't go back there. I don't care if working in public in your underwear is in fashion, it looks disgusting to me.

The trend I really hate is the "Mom Jean" shorts with the butt cheeks hanging out on the bottom. Have some self respect for gods sake!!!

Yuk. I'm at Old Fogey too. And don't get me started on leggings.

there is a segment of the population that are into leggins again, maybe that's what she was wearing them as? i see them on sale on my facebook feed all the time.

I admittedly do "runner" clothes out haha. I run errands quickly before/after a run (on my way back to the office)

There is a whole joke about how leggins/tights are not pants, everytime i say/hear tights I automatically thing "tights are not pants" (it goes on to clarify that leggins are tights :P )

I'm especially fond of tights/leggings that are essentially the color of the wearer's skin (brownish/tan/pink)...worn with a top that doesn't come down at least to cover the crotch. I have no idea where to look as someone like that walks up facing me...if I'm behind them, my facial expression isn't a problem.

And invariably, leggings/tights bring to mind one of my favorite (snarky) sayings:

Just because something comes in your size doesn't mean you should wear it...and just because you can squeeze into it doesn't mean it's your size.

Same here. I've recently gotten into the "barre" workout classes and leggings are essentially part of the uniform. I usually wear a longer shirt over the leggings and I'll put a longer drapey sweater if I need to run a few errands after. I wouldn't wear them as an outfit though, it's just my workout attire.

The general rule is that leggings can be worn as pants if your top is longer than your butt....but I agree just wearing them pants with a short top does not look good!
I wear my running tights with long workout shorts all the time....usually because I don't have time to change, etc.
