    A Few Good Thoughts Please

Going tomorrow at the crack of dawn for an EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy). Still on the fat free diet, so danged tired of chicken and fish. Still losing weight, probably because of the diet.

Was scheduled for last Tuesday but Monday night the GI doctor called very upset. A little background: Not so long ago a series of infections happened to people after an EGD even with the equipment having been sterilized per CDC protocols. Now the equipment has to be steam sterilized. My doctor has set up and EGD and if needed a biopsy. The regular EGD scope was ready to go but the scope for the biopsy was not. It had been sterilized but the hospital requires that 48 hours after cleaning, swabs be taken and tested. My doctor was livid because he had not been informed of this new 48 hour rule and the scope had been used the day prior. He gave me the choice to going ahead knowing that IF a biopsy was needed, it could not be done. I opted to wait; no need to go through this twice.

GI doc suspects chronic pancreatitis since a few small pancreatic calcifications were seen on MRI. There is also the possibility of there being microlithiasis (mini stones)/sludge coming from the gallbladder. Frankly, I almost hope it is a gallbladder problem so we can yank the sucker out. An alternative may be having to take pancreatic enzymes. I've had two more episodes of very bad pain, not as bad as the first time, resolved within 2 hours and did not go to the ER. Also still have the lump feeling in my throat, really strange. After the first clearance, slowly got back on a regular diet with no problems then wham it hit again.

The doc and his office is so great. On informing them of repeat pain they wanted me to call the nurse each day and let them know how I was doing. Well, was doing so good I finally said I would call them when there was a problem. Ok with them.

Hopefully tomorrow's study will answer some questions and I can get back to eating the good stuff.

    Positive waves coming your way.

A few years back I had gall stones hitting the pancreas, each one felt like a mini atom bomb resonating throughout my body. 44 days in and out of the hospital over a couple months, 4 days here, 6 days there, etc. They knew something was wrong, had a good idea what it was, but none of the tests were showing exactly what it was so they couldn't just yank it out. One of the things they gave me for pain was a fentanyl patch. They sent me home and left it on, it wore out and I went into DT's, withdrawal from the fentanyl, I went to the hospital for that and they finally saw the stones when taking unrelated pictures and took the gall bladder.

I've been fine ever since and recovery was smooth and fairly quick, although I put back on all the weight I lost and then some.

    Hope all goes well!!

I that "lump in the throat" feeling something that makes sense for this? Have you had your thyroid levels checked lately? Hypothyroidism can cause that feeling. (I know...just what you need...something else....)

Gee whiz! I really hope this exam finds you some answers. What a pain, and I mean that in every sense of the word.

I'm not sure if the OH had that scope but as you know, he was scoped from top to bottom last spring. The prep is not fun, the scope you are blessedly asleep, he had some discomfort on awakening. I hope you find out what's going on and the Doctors can fix it right away. We've had positive experiences along this line recently and I'm happy to spread some of our good mojo. I'm only sorry you have a delay but thank heavens your Doctor did find out.
