They look like ants to me since their bodies have three distinct sections (I don't know what they're called). You'll know if you put down Amdro. Termites apparently aren't interested in it but ants will carry it right off. Good luck.
I'm thinking ants but want a few other opinions before I brush it off.
I disturbed a nest of these guys digging in my front flower bed (next to a buried stump nonetheless). Must have upturned the nest while I was tilling the dirt up. Several of them were dragging larvae around in the aftermath.
Here's hoping all I need to do is place a few outdoor ant baits.

Looks ants to me. Here's a link that might help: Difference Between Ants & Termites | eHow
As a side note, Mom found termites in her house in MD. If they had not swarmed right at the front door, they may not have known for a long time. They had a cement foundation and brick house. Thing was, as construction got to the point that the dirt was pushed against the house, any wood scraps from framing were buried in the mix. Outside foundation treatment solved the problem.

Ants. And we seem to have more than normal this year....this past winter was apparently just fine for them.

Looks like ants. But we are on the East Coast and wood boring insects vary from area to area. Would recommend a contractor if you see a swarm. Wood boring ants are just as destructive as termites. We have a swarm of itty bitty ants which get everywhere. Typical black ant.

Thanks all! I bought some ant baits last night so we'll see how that goes.

I'm glad you said that. I woke up one morning to find a line of them floor to ceiling in the corner of my kitchen. I was horrified. Put down some Amdro outside the house right where that corner is and that took care of it but it was very strange. Then I went over to my neighbor's yard because I'm regrowing that for him and they were everywhere! I couldn't help but wonder what we were doing wrong.
