    Box Garden

I have this area in my backyard near my rain barrel that would be perfect for a little box garden. The area gets plenty of sun and shade in the later part of the day. I was thinking of growing a few tomato plants maybe to make some homemade salsa.

What else could I grow in my space? Onions? Peppers? I am really clueless here.

Any tips as I have never tried to grow anything before in my life?
    Thanks Everyone!!

Yes. All of them together for a complementary garden. It's called a salsa garden. Here's a link for a basic one:

Another great resource is a classic book called "Tomatoes Love Carrots". Fascinating stuff. And if you grow tomato plants, keep growing them in the same spot. They'll get bigger every year.

Also, if it gets really dry, do a slow drip on tomato plants instead of daily watering. They can get absolutely huge.

Just grow something. It really is one of the simple pleasures in life to cut into a juicy red tomato, and know you made that happen. Tending a garden, small or large, is really it's own reward. Plenty of good help here, just go for it.

Tomatoes and peppers tend to prefer containers more than raised beds, at least in my experience. If you're really, really awful at gardening, you could do something super hardy and a perennial like a raspberry or blueberry bush.

I love gardening, so I grow everything under the sun.

If you grow tomatoes, they LOVE hot and dry weather, so you don't have to water them constantly. You still have to water them more than it rains, but less than most other vegetables.

Back several years ago, several homes ago, I had some raised beds and grew lettuce, green beans, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, carrots, anything I could fit in there. Burpee had some seeds for plants that were more compact than their regular brethren. Throw in an herb like basil or cilantro and you'll feel like a farmer! I planted some marigolds around the edges or corners, supposedly they help repel nasty bugs that want to eat your crops. My current yard doesn't get enough sun to grow much of anything.

What about an herb garden. I love fresh herbs and they are useful year around. You can make some of the best salad dressings and rubs and things. Some herbs even repel mosquitoes and other bugs.

I second the nomination to throw in basil and dill. They grow so easily and taste so wonderful. Enjoy yourself-there is nothing like getting your hands dirty and the sun warming your back!

You don't have a boy dog so I don't think you need my tip. ;0 Though it would also benefit anyone with a vegetable thieving dog.

Where is Kleb? We need input from Kleb.

I have a boy dog, he's 15. I think I am in Zone 5a or b. I can't tell from the map I found online. I found a few good resources on how to build a box and have been reading up on tips for planting etc. I think it will be fun.
    Thanks Everyone!!
