The wildflowers was one of the things I always loved about Texas. The grow everywhere and make for scenic drive anywhere. I think this goes back also to one of the Governors wives. I could be wrong but I was thinking once of the governors wives implemented a plan to seed all highways and parks with wildflowers and let nature go.

Jeff, I learned that Texas apparently began encouraging wildflower growth along state highways in the 1930s. In the 1980s Lady Bird Johnson, First Lady in the 1960s and founder of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin, strongly encouraged the passage of federal legislation encouraging the use of wildflowers along federal highways.

Looks like an amazing trip. You're seeing some great Texas country. I just got back from a camping trip down in the Del Rio area. Love that drive west. I too have met some of the cross country cyclists while traveling in that area.
