What's going on with my irises?

I now have irises scattered all over my property which is great because I like informal gardens. At the moment though, this new patch on one side of my driveway is growing like this.

Any ideas on what is happening here?

Talked with someone today that loves iris. She said some of the older varieties have stems that aren't as strong as newer varieties and are more apt to be blown over if you get a good wind. Plus, taller iris are more prone to wind damage. She stakes her taller ones, but has vowed to stick with the mid-height ones from now on.

I have heard of people staking them too. Mine are up against the house, so I guess that protects them a bit.

I'm going to have to look up staking. The stems on these particular ones are really variable so I was surprised when this happened but I have a lovely dusky light purple iris that is so top heavy that it just hits the ground as soon as it blooms. It's not like this at all. It hits the ground and doesn't come back. Staking would be perfect for it. I thought that I might be overfeeding or something but it sounds like it's a property of the variety.
