    Why do you call 911?

In the last six months, I have called 911 five times. Once was for an impaired semi driver who was crossing the line on a country road pushing everyone in oncoming traffic into the dirt. That sounds like a legitimate call. Fairly dramatic.

All of the other times though have been because people are putting everything from appliances to furniture to contractor's trash bags full of all kinds of stuff onto the roofs of their cars, driving down the interstate at 65 mph and, not surprisingly, this stuff winds up in the middle of the freeway. What are people thinking?

    Why do you call 911?

I've never had to call 911...but I do call the non-emergency number fairly frequently (always about the loose pit bull in our area..at times Animal Control is closed). Others in the neighborhood have also called (which number?) for things like toddlers left alone up by the main drag, drug traffic, etc. It always involves the same family.

I take back the "never". I forgot about when I lived in my first apartment...I called twice.

My ground floor apt. was broken into and trashed.

A woman was beaten and raped in the middle of the night right outside my bedroom window (I was the only one who called according to the policeman who showed up at my door at my request...I was petrified.).

I my first apartment I had a phone with a 911 button. This was an office looking phone and laid flat. One night I received a call from 911 asking if everything was ok. They had rec'd a 911 hang up from this phone. I told them I was in bed asleep and alone. Two days later I saw my cat standing on the phone! She had dialed 911! I guess she was not happy with her dinner selection!

Never had to call 911 but I have called the non-emergency line a few times. We live on an L-shaped street with very little traffic. The other side of the street faces the side of houses so it's mostly fences. We get the occasional car of teenagers looking for a quiet place to get high. I used to ignore it but then I saw more adults and sketchy behavior. Cops patrolled for a while, arrested a few people, and somehow word got out that our street wasn't a quiet place to do that stuff so it hasn't happened in a while.

We called for a fire on the side of the interstate. The dispatcher said we were the first ones to call about it. So glad we didn't assume someone had already reported it

I got a call with really weird noises once...did a "return call" thing and found out that a friend's two little dogs were playing tug-of-war with her cell phone. My button was obviously under someone's tooth at one point.

YIKES! Hope it turned out with only minor damage.

Called 911 once when the previous neighbors put a dog in a crate outside, right beside our fence. The dog barked the entire time and we could see it had no water. Officer came and checked it out, gave it water and said she would be back in an hour; if nobody was home she would take the dog. Friends of the neighbor came home a little later and took the dog inside. Poor dog was out in the sun and it was a hot day.
