I went to the neighborhood grocery store and after getting my stuff, gave the cashier my credit card, and the transaction was refused. That honked me off. (I have a 15,000$ credit limit, mind you and couldn't buy 31$ worth of groceries.) This is not the first time I've had issues with this card. I was robo-called twice by this company's computers to confirm that it was I who purchased gasoline at a neighborhood gas station earlier in the day.
So, I called the number on the card... went through 5 minutes of a menu from hell, and then gave the guy 1) the phone # associated with the card 2) my street address 3) the numbers on the back of the card 4) my mother's maiden name and 5) the last four digits of my SSN.
Then I was allowed to ask why I'd not been able to buy a box of wine and a package of hamburger buns. What they said was that someone had used my card the previous night in Mississippi, spending $31.22.
I was frosted. I asked the lady if she'd ever heard of this wild new thing called the internet. It allows folks to buy stuff across state lines and the merchants even ship you your order. I'd told her that I'd bough 6 orange training bumpers and 3 white ones from Gun Dog Supply. Crazy, I know. Highly suspicious. I mean... if you stole a credit card in Nevada, wouldn't the FIRST thing you would do would be to take a jet across the United States, drive into the heart of Nowhere, MS and buy rubber training bumpers!!!!???
But SINCE I live in Nevada, I asked her if they would notice if someone took my card 10 miles from my home, went into a casino and took a cash advance for $5000. They said they weren't sure about that, since they didn't know what the security algorithm for NV was.
Algorithm. She said it would take a little time for the computer to learn my spending habits. I explained that these rubber training bumpers would last longer than the dog... but if in a decade, I'd lost some and wanted to buy some more, what did she suggest I do? I'm supposed to call them and tell them I plan to buy some more dog training equipment.
Right. I told her, that I campaign my dog in distant locations... would I be able to buy gasoline and a hotel room. She said I was supposed to call them before leaving the house. I asked, if I was traveling home from an event and needed gasoline what was I supposed to do if my card was refused. Just call. I asked the lady where she was. Davenport Iowa. I told her to look on AT&T and check their cell tower coverage and note that most of Nevada is so remote, there isn't any. So... she said, I'm supposed to call them prior to leaving on my trip.
SOoooo... I told the lady that I wanted her to notify the computer, that tonight, I was going to go on line (on that crazy thing called the internet) and buy... a BRA. It's going to be white. A 34C. I'm not sure from what city the order might be processed. Could be Chicago. Might be LA. Could be Athens... Georgia. Or Cairo... Illinois. Would that be OK with the computer, or would my card be canceled in the morning. She responded (and I'm not making this up...) that she'd notified the computer of my plans.
I. Cannot. Believe. This.

OMG! You have to call them when you travel?? Yes Mom, no Mom . . . . . . . .
Guess staying in the same area and not going on vacations does pay off where credit cards are concerned.

It so frustrates me. It's not MY security they are wondering about. It's theirs. So... I suppose, if I don't know when my card will be put on hold, that means, I have to keep cash on me to cover anything. So they would preferred a 68 year old woman traveling alone in fairly remote locations, to travel with enough cash for whatever hotel/gasoline/food/whatever. Like that's better for my "security".
You cannot rely on a computer with bizarre, inexplicable "algorithms" to keep you safe.
Fine. I have a Sig p226 and my purse full of cash. No problem. Who needs a stinking credit card.
Sorry. I'm just so pissed.
What bank holds this card? I never have issues w/ mine.

I got the card through a credit union. They are fine. The company that actually manages the credit account is called Atira Credit. Pass the word. They are not rational nor are they interested in the financial security of their customers. They are protecting their own backsides with an algorithm that only a cloistered nun could live within. I probably am not making them enough money since I pay my balance off every month.
This recently happened with my Bank of America card. It gets old.
Actually, it is way more common now. And, yes, for the most part, if you are going to be traveling, and you do not initially make a purchase that indicates that you will be traveling with that card (ie: luggage charge at the airport or something to that effect), you should probably notify your credit card company that you will be traveling and that you will be the one using your card. It really doesn't take that long to call the card company and ask them to code that you will be traveling to such and such a destination and will be using such and such a card...I will be doing that in June and October.
Honestly, it can be frustrating, but I would rather them be more secure than not after having money stolen from me and multiple attempts at fraud on my cards.
Bounty... that is truly not the way I envisioned living in the 21st Century. I can see it if I am going overseas. But not to Idaho. After I've used my credit card on Entry Express for $160 to enter an event in Idaho on those dates. Just not cool. The lady on the phone said I should tell them basically the route I'd be taking and which states I'd be driving through.
My 92 year old mother (bless her heart) runs on cash. I think I'll start doing much the same thing.
