      Memorial Day

I had the pleasure of serving this country for over 22 years. Every day we knew our government could send us into harms way, and possibly give our lives in defense of the nation. My last assignment was at Dover Air Force Base. The base is home to the Port Mortuary, the place where fallen members of the military are brought back to American soil. A very good friend of mine worked at the Port Mortuary, and I asked him many times how he could do it, how he could make sure the remains are cared for, dress them in full dress uniforms, and ready them for the trip to their final resting place. How he could hold it together meeting the families, knowing their grief. He told me he was honored to be one of the few selected to perform this duty. He told me of the sleepless nights, the long days, and how he would never forget every one of the fallen he cared for.

These are two videos showing a fraction of what these dedicated members of every branch of the military do every day to honor those who have paid the ultimate price. I ask that you say a prayer today not only for those who died, but also for those who serve the dead.

      BARRY,
A most apropos thread on this Memorial Day. So many have lost the true meaning of this most significant day of remembrance for those that made the ultimate sacrifice for those of us that live on in the land of liberty. I worked a career in law enforcement and was required to make death notifications to families, a duty of the position I held that I upheld with respect whilst always dreding having to do so - never easy. God bless those responsible for the duties of dignified transfer at Dover.

My own family suffered the loss of a family friend, Corporal John M. Dawson - KIA in Afghanistan just a year ago this past April at the age of 22. I called his parents and sister this morning to let them know that John was in our thoughts and prayers and is NEVER FORGOTTEN. I post his photo here in this thread to put a human face / perspective on this most important subject.

God Rest Ye John AND ALL OF YE FALLEN BROTHERS AND SISTERS.

      Respectfully,

I am very sorry for your loss Mike. I can't even imagine how difficult it was for you to tell someone a loved one had died. It's been a very long time since I considered Memorial Day a holiday. I hope and pray that one day mankind can decide to get along, so no one ever has to sacrifice their life in the defense of their country.
