Ouch! No good. I've never experienced it personally but know several who have. I'm not sure about the effectiveness of treatments but know that it's not a fun predicament to be in. Very painful/uncomfortable condition.
Wife has been complaining of lower back pain for over a month. Finally went to the bone crusher. Find out she has a bulging disc. In therapy now but still in a lot of pain. Has anyone experienced this? Does therapy work or just help relieve some pain? Does it ever go back to normal? Looks like our scuba diving days are over.
Hope all is well and have a great day

Sorry to hear about your wife. Definitely would stop scuba diving. My husband had to stop as he has a three level spinal fusion and getting older, has more possibly of the bends due to this. Hate Table 7, had to take someone there.
Don't know about therapy, just don't let her get hooked on drugs. These new pharmacuticals are powerful and very addicting. And you never hear a good story. My husband took years to stop what the doc created.
Wishing her all the luck.

from about 15 yrs ago, the mri showed bulging l4-l5 and fluid leaking out. not a terrible surgery these days, (laminectomy) but i've yet to have it. i have constant , but not always horrid, sciatica and cant tie my own right sneaker.
drugs don't do anything so i don't bother , even oxy doesn't do the trick . one of these days, when i cant stand it anymore……
So much depends on this and that but a friend of ours who lost his first year of university and a pro baseball career chance to disk surgery that the recuperation from pretty well wiped out that university year did go on to have an exceptionally active and athletic life with drawers full of medals from international cross country ski races. Now, at pushing 70, he has had to modify his expectations, no more solo week long canoe trips because portaging a lot of weight solo is too tough. Yeah, like the rest of us are still doing our solo trips. Not. So I would hope her scuba diving days are only on hold temporarily, not over.
Regarding scuba diving, better watch with injuries. If you don't decompress or even do a correct safety stop, you could get the bends. Soft tissue and hard tissue hold nitrogen and if you are hurt and there is swelling or irritation in the area, that is a prone area of bends. Just be careful and find out from experts before your wife dives again.
My husband was really upset that he had to quit, but safety and health first.

I have 3 herniated discs in my back. declined surgery and just deal with it. some days when it flares up to where I cant walk I take oxy and it works for me. if you are overweight, losing that extra weight helps alot. there is a new laser surgery out that I am willing to try, but in my area they dont take most common medical insurances.

Thanks for all the feedback and words of wisdom. I guess we'll see how much the therapy works. As far as the scuba goes, unfortunetly, we have a trip comming up, all nonfundable. I guess she turns into a bubble watcher. The trip is a couple months down the road so cross your fingers.
thanks again,
Hope all is well and have a great day

I had a herniated disc a few years back. It was excruciating pain that I thought would never go away or get better. The doctor finally put me on prednisone to reduce swelling. It worked, but i was in agony for several months. Now all is fine. Good luck to your wife. I also had pain that shot down my right leg - it was horrible. I really hope your wife can get some relief. It really is one of the most painful things you can go through.

And because I am such a pinhead I insisted on walking Charlie (only had him at the time) and I remember being in so much pain even with pain meds that I would sit down on the walk and just cry. All behind me now just as I hope it is for your wife too.
