    Asking to leave early?

Hey guys, some of you may know about my never ending search for a new job. I was called for an interview with the division of Children & Families, just an admin position but state paid time off is a crazy luxury compared to where I am now. Anyway I need to ask to leave early to take the typing test first week of October. I am nervous about telling them why-what do I say? I don't want to say a dr. appt. as most ppl do-because what if they ask for a note? My employer has never ever questioned any time I've asked for even though since I'm under 40 hrs. I don't really have a set amount of time...but I am a bit nervous. I just need to lease 2 hours early-what do I say??

I would just say personal matter or an appointment. I don't think employers can actually ask for a dr note unless you are gone from work sick for a certain number of days, but that law could be different from state to state.

I'd just say it's an appointment and leave it at that. If pressed, say it's a personal matter.

I normally would do that however this is a small office and everyone always says why..especially me. I looked up in my calendar and I have taken 5 sick days this year for my daughter and another day fro her class trip and 3 times I left early but made that time up-one day for Montana, one day for my dd's school even ( left for only an hour)this type of stuff....and of course I will immediately say that I plan to make the 2 hours up....

Just tell them it's a personal matter you need to attend to. They do not need to know nor should they ask. If they do ask, just repeat that it's a personal matter.

I agree totally. Tell them you have a personal matter you need to attend to. Since you've always told them why you were taking time off, they might be curious but that's their problem. You do not need to exaggerate.

The answer depends upon internal policy, culture and common practice.
