Maybe your recall routine has become predictable for Rocco. What I mean by that is maybe he's memorized the pattern. You do the same thing in the same place (call him to you). He does the same thing (run towards you). You do the same thing (give him a reward). Maybe try recalling him at different times and places and with different rewards. Just change the game on him and really make him pay attention to you.

I'm guessing you live in the country? He finds that running to your neighbors is more of a reward than playing fetch with you. If you do live in the country this is difficult and I get it. You have to find something that makes staying by you more rewarding Han going to the neighbors. A different toy with a louder squeak? Maybe a special one that he only gets when he comes to you in that situation?

For instance, play fetch for a few tosses with a regular ball. Get this special new one out, maybe lather it in peanut butter or cheese whiz, and give him that as a reward for coming to you (not for playing fetch) and make a HUGE deal out of it. Then put the toy away and play regular fetch some more. Rinse and repeat, but don't overuse the special toy and always pull it out at random so he never knows when it's coming. Just mix things up and be more unpredictable. Keep that smart boy guessing!

Maybe he just shouldn’t be off lead if you have no control over him?

Honestly Bernie, he's not ready for offlead work if he is going to be rewarded for non compliance. Say what you mean and Mean what you say. It's as simple as that. Again, how old is he?

O.K. , the next time it happens I'll put a 1/4" cable on his collar and hook it to the back of the pickup and drag him home. I'll show him who's in charge!
There are no regulations to become a dog trainer and sometimes it shows.

Sadly it seems there are no regulations for being a dog owner, and it shows every time.

I don't think you understand, Bernie. No one is suggesting cruelty to be used in lieu of training. The training foundations must be done first, and until that is done, the dog isn't safe off leash.

I personally use a LOT of treats/ rewards here in training and have trained more than a dozen Labs in the past 20 yrs to advanced titles. They are all (or were) happy, well adjusted, loved companions.

Obedience is necessary for our dogs' safety.

I would be surprised if there is anyone on this forum who would agree that cruelty is the answer. You just seem to like to ask questions, then argue or make accusations about others. I guess you can go talk to yourself!

    What do you call this?
    positive reward training?

"if they don’t come when called and I have to go get them, they get dragged back by the collar to wherever I called them from while being scolded “NO ... I said COME, I said COME, I said COME” "

Since I’m the one who posted that, we call it “balanced training". Rewards for good behavior, but sometimes yes, compliance is forced if they know what we want and decide to ignore us. Recalls are safety issues so not something I’m going to fool around with letting the dog get away with not doing ... that’s a sure way to get them killed by a car if they ignore you in the wrong place. And the correction of being dragged by the collar (the horror of being made to come with me instead of going wherever they want - oh how terrible!) only happens AFTER they’ve been taught through rewards what a recall is.

Up to you how you handle your dog - I’m just explaining what I do with mine.

Edited to add - I don’t consider myself a “positive only” trainer, but my understanding of how that method works is not allowing the dog the opportunity to make a mistake and self-reward until it is very used to obeying and has gradually worked it’s way up distractions etc. So according to that method, your dog would certainly not be playing fetch off lead.

Your problem is essentially that your dog finds the neighbor’s yard much more interesting than he finds you.

I don't think that's the problem, but I understand the logic behind the statement.
