Yeah a lot of the time I run him on leash up to the off leash park we always walk off leash at, just a few blocks away, and then I run around the park while he sniffs. He sniffs everything so much though that he still gets incredibly far behind me and then seems mad when i call him to come catch up haha. Today I'm going to go to the beach and run him there and see how he does.

The beach run was a huge success. We played about 10 minutes of fetch before starting. We ran the first mile on leash (though we took a break and took him off leash when he found a great playmate). He didn't lag behind at all and was a little in front of me so complete opposite of running on the sidewalk. On the way back I took him off leash and he mostly ran by my side except for the occasional dip into the ocean. We then played more fetch to end the outing. So not sure if it's that he loves the beach, which I already knew , or that he doesn't mind running on the sand as much. Either way I'll definitely be mixing more beach runs into our routine.

I ran with Cookie twice, once he was off-leash and once he was on-leash. We ran for about 3 kilometers. He was horrible on-leash. I saw that he just didn't want to do it. I guess running on-leash is boring for some dogs. They can't sniff the ground, sprint around, and have fun. They just keep running at the same monotonous pace for miles and miles.

I rarely take him running though, my tempo runs are too fast and my long runs are too long for him.

i recently bumped into my dog trying to jog and stepped on her paw and twisted my knee... i have decided that next time off leash in a woods with to work on this skill.I do go walking off leash and jogging in a fenced 10 acre lot. but this is next step.

I understand that it's probably boring for him, but it's boring for me too! I don't really like running either, but I have to do it so he should have to suffer along with me I never make him only run, we also always do off leash time at the park for one of our outings, so hour off-leash in the morning and then a short run in the afternoon. I feel like he is living a pretty comfy life compared to most dogs! This is probably how parents feel when they think that their kids are ungrateful.

LOL, yes, but you may see a point in long distance running, while a dog does not Maybe try running with a running group? That is what I do, and it's never boring!

When I used to run with Chloe (bad knee so gave it up at least for now), we would run on a path along the lake and she was allowed a break at the half-way point where I would throw a toy for her and let her swim. She was happy to run with me as it got her to her lake faster, LOL. Otherwise she probably would have thought it was boring too.
