    Muzzle...not to stop barking, but...

Eating. Of non-approved things while off-leash on a hike in the woods. Sophie will go for anything that could be considered food, whether it's poop or whatever other gross thing she finds.

I'm at my wits-end after what she got herself into last weekend while walking through a gorgeous conservation area here in Ontario (Sheffield Conservation - check it out if you're able! Sheffield Conservation Area).

We were heading back to the car when she bounded up onto a flat-top rocky area and started mowing down into something we couldn't see from where we were. My guy ran up to see what it was, and she was eating used toilet paper that had human feces on it. UUGGGGGHHHHHHH. SOPHIE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??!!

Anyway, so you can (hopefully) understand why we need to prevent her from eating things while out. We went to a PetSmart after this and tried one of these on her, which could do the trick if it would stay on her:
Grreat Choice® Dog Muzzle | dog Harnesses | PetSmart

Has anyone else tried this or have any suggestions? These muzzles allow panting and drinking, of course, and she'd only have to have it on when off-leash. Girl can't be trusted.

    Oh, yuk....Sophie, Sophie, Sophie....

My gut reaction is "NO" to the muzzle. I wouldn't muzzle a dog that might be out of my line of sight at any time...predators, other dogs.... I wouldn't muzzle a dog that most likely would be panting hard if running...even the write-up for this item says to keep it on for no longer than 20 minutes.

Me? I wouldn't be letting her loose if she was eating stuff I couldn't possibly allow. That toilet paper qualifies.... I'd recommend a retractable leash for woods-walking for Miss Sophie.

EWWWWW!!! seriously though! Rocky is an obsessive poop eater. Still. i mean obsessive. He went offtrails and found some yesterday (and like, he has trouble off trail in the snow!! but still he's like - ZOOOMMM right to a random poop to eat).

The link isn't working for me, but Baskerville Muzzles are good for activity. Baskerville Hound?
Baskerville Muzzles | Company of Animals

BUT, a huge disclaimer. I tried with for Rocky. A basket muzzle at the dog park to stop the poop eating. IT DID NOT WORK :P It got even MORE GROSS. He learned very quickly to squish the muzzle INTO THE POOP to eat what he could. Then he would go up to people and rub the muzzle against their leg. IT.WAS.AWFUL. so we ditched that idea pretty fast :P

Rocky lost pretty much all off leash privileges sadly. Even when visiting friends it is an issue as few people keep their yard as clean as mine :P I joke that when I had Penny and she pooped in the yard it was a race between myself and rocky to see who got it first :P Sometimes I just let him off and had to accept whatever he did (in fenced spaces). But it wasn't just an issue offleash, there is poop along the trails we walk (bike path - don't get me started) and he'd like grab a bite as we walked on leash!)

I didn't notice that - thanks. I just grabbed the link to paste it here and didn't read it.
We do use a retractable when she's leashed. It's just that she loves to run and we love watching her run. *sigh* Silly dog.
What we'd like to do is get our own property large enough that we can go for hikes and not run into situations like this.

Cat poop is Gigi's candy.. she ignores all else.
I can get her to even leave bones on the trail and when it comes to cat poop no way .

The weird thing is she will eat but keep playing with it in her mouth. Nasty.

My last dog did the same too ... So I am immune to it now.except when she tries kisses after that.

No to muzzle at the end of the day it's a dog and an animal.

You might not run into human poop on your own property but you will assuredly run into other animal poop- deer, fox, raccoon, and dead birds and rodents for your pup to enjoy. Even at less than an acre with only a split rail fence, mine get treated to rabbit and deer poop, there's a neighborhood fox or 2 that I know run through our yard also. Human? OMG, some people are such pigs. Even on leash, if I'm walking past animal poop that I didn't realize was there, one of mine will go for it like a heat seeking missile. Sometimes "leave it!!!" will work, other times I'm holding her mouth open hoping I can shake it out and not have to reach in to get whatever it is out. I can see mine smashing the muzzle down into the poop if they thought they could still get to it. Makes me a little nauseated to even think about it.

If your only options to walk her off leash are places like that I'd definitely go with a muzzle. I didn't look at the links. Jet was like that and we had some episodes when canoeing, at portages and campsites so we leashed her or tied her up. Once on the Bruce Trail she scarfed down something that I managed to reach back into her throat and grab before she swallowed, and hauled out a used tampon.

Yep,been there on a walk holding her mouth open, trying to shake stuff out before. So aggravating sometimes!

A couple weekends ago we were walking a potential property and encountered...wild turkey poop! It looks like rabbit poop, only bigger. She tasted it once but never went for it again (at least, not at a second property we walked).

BTW, I'm assuming it was human based on the use of the TP.

Yeah, I was thinking that would end up happening, too. YUCK.
