    Separation Anxiety

Not my lab, but do you think a crate trained dog could develop separation anxiety from one overnight hospital stay? The Griff was fine in a crate since we got her at 11 weeks. Since her day stay at one vet and the overnight stay at the ER, she HOWLS in her crate until she falls asleep. Never had a dog that had SA before. We're trying to keep our normal routine and hope she grows out of this once she starts to feel better.

Could be it's not actually separation anxiety but anxiety about being in the crate....that experience is still too recent. Hopefully, she'll grow out of it.

We have no idea of Sunnie's past...except that she was at the shelter for a month and a half (some earlier bit in a foster situation). She is petrified of the crate. Wants nothing to do with it. Was she ever crated before? I have no clue. But a big part of me thinks it's because she was crated at the shelter and...knowing how she is with noises and activity....the shelter scared the bejeebies out of her.

I can get Sunnie settled in a crate only if Dan is in there with her. Needless to say, that doesn't happen often. (Actually, we dismantled the crate and have it folded up and set aside "just in case".)

She went through a pretty scary experience, not so much the crate but being sick. It may not be SA as much as needing to be near you for confidence. As I understand, she is still not fully back to normal. Keep her schedule and routine normal, like you said, is important.

I have been trying like crazy to find the other ingredient, common in treats, that can cause seizures in dogs that are susceptible. It starts with tri or tro but dang I can't find it now. I've made sure none of Archie's treats contain it. It's a preservative, and like rosemary, have been linked with problems. I'll continued searching and let you know.

I agree - it’s probably more PTSD than separation anxiety. Clusters of seizures like she had can take a while to recover completely from, so she may still be a bit off from that. I’d give it some more time before worrying too much. Hopefully once she’s feeling more back to herself, she will be okay with the crate again.

My friend's dog got spooked in a wire crate once. No idea what happened. Tried to put him back in and he'd shake and drool. Had to be crated, but just overnight, so put the Noz-2-Noz in the bedroom and he slept in that for quite a while. Recently put him back into a wire crate and he is fine. So, maybe try a different crate like an airline crate or RTK or maybe put a blanket over a wire crate (I'm assuming this is what you are using) or somehow make things different. Might help?

Definitely, thanks. Anything to watch for. We just had what seemed like such a solid link to the rosemary. I am hoping that's really

We've tried her wire crate, a big plastic crate, in our bedroom, in the dog room. We go back to work tomorrow, I have no choice but to crate during the day. She's taken to inappropriate chewing while recovering too. And counter surfing.
