All puppies can be horrible. If she thinks the puppy is a good fit for you and your family I'd consider it. They are untrained little sharks.

That being said, they are fun, loving, little sponges that love to learn. I have greatly enjoyed both of mine. You do need to be prepared for waking up, potty training, and teaching them what you expect of them. Socialization classes are a VERY good idea. And also, see if your son is ok with it. He may not be ready for another dog, one that will be a gangly awkward and possibly rowdy teenager, for quite a while.

Thanks guys! I've had puppies before but it has been many years. I do recall the nipping/biting phase but don't recall it lasting to long. I know that labs are mouthy so figured it might be of longer duration in this breed. I have discussed this with my son and he really likes the idea of a puppy. He is around 2 ACD pups every week at the barn where my daughter takes riding lessons. One of them is very mouthy and the instructor and I have explained to him how to deal with it by yelping, saying No Bite!, walking away etc., so he seems to understand that pups bite but it is in play. I'm still not sure we are ready right now and she said if we don't want this pup she has a litter from another dam coming in September. I also want to check about the health clearances.

We are taking Forest to her this evening and despite his food guarding issues, I am really going to miss this goofy, sweet boy.

We've given him back to the breeder. It was very bittersweet. He ran right up to her, tail wagging! I swear I think he remembered her! It made it easier that he didn't throw any kind of fit and just went with her. We all cried on the way home.

Puppies Never forget their breeder! I have seen a couple of my puppies a few years later and they get so excited to see me. It's always such a surprise to their family that the puppy remembers me, but not their dog mom.

I am so very sorry, I have no words, I just hope your family's heart can heal now. I really don't know what I would do about the puppy the breeder offered you. How old is she, has she had any training? I would sleep on it for sure, and maybe in a few days it will be more clear what you should do. My thoughts are with you right now though, just make sure your son knows this is none of his fault, and keep reassuring him of that. He may blame himself, because he was the one the dog went after, just make sure he knows it wasn't him, it was the dog.

The pup the breeder is offering is about 8 weeks old. So obviously no training. I have discovered that she does not do any of the health testing that should be done so I think I will pass on the pup. There is good breeder very near me that I am going to contact sometime soon and talk to. She does the health clearances and shows her dogs.

Forest is not doing well at the breeders. She told me he was fine until after she fed him last night. After eating he began growling at everyone and everything in his crate. I think my baby is very stressed. Apparently he was some better today. I just can't stop thinking about and missing him. It's so quite here.

Aw gee whiz, it sounded like this was going to be best for Forest. If I mentionned this already, sorry, but a dog who our favourite boarding kennel knew well began acting very aggressively and long story short, turned out to have a brain tumour. Maybe Forest has something less drastic, but needs a thorough vetting with bloodwork and whatever more can be done?

I'm sorry this didn't work out as you'd hoped but I have to say that I'm relieved your son is no longer living with a potential threat to his safety. I hope that the breeder will be able to get him turned around...sad that he has this issue for whatever reason.

I'm sorry you had to bring Forrest back to the breeder. I must be so hard for you and your family but after reading all your posts, it was the right decision. It also sounds like when the time is right you will prove a good home for the right dog.

Here is a little update! Forest is doing much better according to the breeder. He has made friends with one of her cats, and isn't growling at anyone anymore, except a couple of her dogs. I was surprised to hear about the cat friendship as one of my cats he did not get along with at all and the other one he was to rough with lol. She said she is now more comfortable with beginning to actively look for him a home.

I miss him so much. but I'm relieved to hear he is doing better.
