You really need to get a handle on his leash walking, he isn't a 90 lbs Labrador, he is a medium/small 40/45 lbs dog right? Teach him not to pull you, so you don't feel like you are going to fall. It sounds like he needs another round of training classes or some one on one training classes to get this fixed while he is young, the longer he disrespects you while on leash, the longer it will take to break his habits. You can try a (properly fitted and used) prong training collar to help him respect the leash, and you will have to remember to be firm with him, a trainer can help you with that. Good luck!
When you say he's not ready to be off leash in a large area what about when you take your dog outside to play? Like in a fenced in back yard? My puppy's recall isn't 100% yet as he is only 11 weeks but I also want him to be able to run around and play wiht his older brother.

I’m assuming she meant in an area which is unfenced and/or so big it would be hard to catch him. I’ve let my dogs play in the fenced in yard from day 1, although I do insist on an excellent recall before allowing them to be off-lead anywhere else.

Completely depends on the dog. Recall is one of the first things we teach when they are very little, but it’s more about behavior than age. My current dogs were all good by about a year, but they also had older dogs setting good examples for them on outings.

I read this as off-lead, sorry. Loose leash? Also depends on the dog. Sass still gets excited and pulls occasionally, the other two have been good since about a year or less. Sass is fine most of the time, but has impulse control issues when she gets excited, LOL.

8-10 weeks or so, after I introduced the lead. Like I said, I never let them pull in the first place, so they never do, after a few lessons. I do so wish I were closer to help you!

8-10 WEEKS!? Holy cow. I was watching an instructional video and it said it can take 8-12 MONTHS to teach a dog to walk on a loose lead. I wanted to cry.

    Actually what I said was:

"He is 9 months old, and not ready to be off lead in a wild hiking area. You could do some practice in a large fenced in area, but until his recall is 100%, and he hasn't learned his manners yet, he hasn't earned the right to be off lead in an open area yet."

Key words, "wold hiking area" and "open area". Your yard, I assume is fenced in, making it a closed area, if you don't have a fenced yard, then on the leash 100% of the time until they have a 100% recall.

My puppies and litters play freely in my back yard, they also all come running when I say "Puppy Puppy Puppy!" in an excited voice, they learn that means food, either a meal or yummy treat, so they all come running. I work with that when I start training my keepers to "Here", and it works really well. There are times the 'teenagers' will test you, but they lose privileges and we go back to square one until it passes. :-) Another thing, never, ever give a command you can't be absolutely certain you can enforce, they will learn they can get away with not listening if they can get away with it.

This is a great way to teach recall and you must start young. I did this with both our Lab pups and was hiking with them off leash in 1,000 and 4,000 acre places, as far as I thought they should go when young, from very early on.

Most of mine have been ready for Rally Nov (loose leash work required) by 6mos.
One of my favorite trainers says "Say what you mean, and mean what you Say". Consistency goes a long long ways when training a puppy! I personally start out at ~4 mos w/ a prong collar. They usually only need it a month or 2 at the most. Then it's ingrained that they are accompanying me, not vice versa. I broke my back ~16 yrs ago, so I have very little tolerance of pulling. But yes, once past the prong phase, off lead walks are enjoyed here. I've had some go as early as 4.5 mos w/o issue, but then I have older dogs that also "help" ingrain good habits.

Like others have said, you start loose leash training the moment they get home and you stick with it. A lot of people say no forced exercise or walks right away, be ware of germs and so on. Which is true but you have to use common sense. So like the First week Hemi came home we went on walks together on a leash. It was just around the house, but it was a walk, there was a lot of training and learning and exploring the world. Week two we went to the side walk and walked to other side of the neighbors yard. Week three we went 2 neighbors yards and so on. Hemi also went all kinds of places. I know little bit late for you on that hopefully someone else reads this and starts right away.

Hemi got his Canine good citizen at 7 months old. He had a relapse of issues when he was little over 1, we just had to go back to basics and work on it.

There is no "one size fits all" answer.
Dogs like people are all different.
